⚪ SEVENTH AND LAST SATURDAY OF EASTER ⚪

21:20-25

Peter turned and saw the disciple following whom Jesus loved,
the one who had also reclined upon his chest during the supper
and had said, "Master, who is the one who will betray you?"
When Peter saw him, he said to Jesus, "Lord, what about him?"
Jesus said to him, "What if I want him to remain until I come?
What concern is it of yours?
You follow me."
So the word spread among the brothers that that disciple would not die.
But Jesus had not told him that he would not die,
just "What if I want him to remain until I come?
What concern is it of yours?"

It is this disciple who testifies to these things
and has written them, and we know that his testimony is true.
There are also many other things that Jesus did,
but if these were to be described individually,
I do not think the whole world would contain the books
that would be written.

John concludes his Gospel narrative with this passage, in which he sees himself in the scene, once again as the disciple whom Jesus loved. He is recounting this moment on the third occasion that Jesus appeared to his apostles after his resurrection, and he recalls that special moment during the Last Supper when he reclined on Jesus' chest. With what emotion John must have remembered that moment, unable to stop mentioning it.

May God grant that we may be like this in our lives, never forgetting those encounters where we experience the presence of the Lord and, from there, rekindling in our hearts the desire for more people to know him.

For his part, Jesus never ceases to teach. On this occasion, after purifying Peter's heart of the wound caused by his three denials, he calls him again with conviction: "Follow me." Peter doesn't know exactly what will happen when he heeds Jesus' call. He obeys and goes with him. However, something unexpected occurs: although Jesus called him, the beloved disciple also began the journey with them. Peter was puzzled and asked Jesus, “What about him?”

We don’t know exactly what was going through his mind or heart, whether he thought that only he should answer this call, or if he might even have been bothered by John’s presence. The Lord responds, “What if I want him to remain until I come? What concern is it of yours? ” Some versions even translate this passage more bluntly, with “What concern is it of yours?”

Sometimes we get carried away by what we want to do or what we want to happen, we don’t see God’s hand in what is happening around us, or we might even envy another brother or sister experiencing our spiritual journeys or being called by the Lord to a task “more important” than our own.

We are all important, as Saint Paul wrote to the Corinthians, “The eye cannot say to the hand, ‘I don’t need you!’ And the head cannot say to the feet, ‘I don’t need you!’” We are all part of the body of Christ, and we all have something to contribute so that, united as the Church, more people may come to know Christ.

Jesus reminds us that all power in heaven and on earth has been given to Him. That is why He says that if He wants me to live until His return, He can do it. He can make even the least prepared speak and can perform miracles in those we least expect. Let us not underestimate the power of God that works in our brothers and sisters; on the contrary, let us give glory to Him when one of our brothers or sisters receives a grace, a gift, and puts it at the service of others.

Today I invite you to open your heart to God's love and be attentive to the works the Lord does through those you come into contact with, and may that moment help you remember the great things He has done for you.

Lord Jesus,
just as You called Peter to follow You without comparing himself to others, help me also to live my own vocation with fidelity and trust. May I not be distracted by looking at the path of others, but rather learn to listen to You and follow You each day.

Thank You because Your love and Your works are so great that the whole world would not be enough to contain them. Make my life also a small testimony of You. Amen.

⚪ SEVENTH AND LAST SATURDAY OF EASTER ⚪

28:16-20, 30-31

When he entered Rome, Paul was allowed to live by himself,
with the soldier who was guarding him.

Three days later he called together the leaders of the Jews.
When they had gathered he said to them, "My brothers,
although I had done nothing against our people
or our ancestral customs,
I was handed over to the Romans as a prisoner from Jerusalem.
After trying my case the Romans wanted to release me,
because they found nothing against me deserving the death penalty.
But when the Jews objected, I was obliged to appeal to Caesar,
even though I had no accusation to make against my own nation.
This is the reason, then, I have requested to see you
and to speak with you, for it is on account of the hope of Israel
that I wear these chains."

He remained for two full years in his lodgings.
He received all who came to him, and with complete assurance
and without hindrance he proclaimed the Kingdom of God
and taught about the Lord Jesus Christ.

Paul finally arrives in Rome, the place he so longed to go to proclaim the Gospel. But he doesn't arrive as a great, admired leader, but as a prisoner. Even so, the first thing he does is not complain, but seek out people to tell them about Jesus. This speaks volumes about his heart and his calling.

This passage reminds us that difficult circumstances do not stop God's work. Paul was in chains, yes, but the Word was not. From a simple house and under guard, he continued to receive people, teaching and proclaiming the Kingdom of God "with complete assurance
and without hindrance."

How powerful it is to think that we often believe we need the perfect moment to speak about God: when we have time, stability, the right mood, or fewer problems. And Paul teaches us the opposite: even in the midst of trials, weariness, or uncertainty, we remain disciples and missionaries.

It is also very significant that Paul first engages with the Jews. He doesn't come imposing his will, but explaining, listening, and bearing witness. He teaches us that evangelizing is not about fighting or forcing, but about patiently sharing what we have experienced with Christ.

And the ending of Acts remains “open.” It doesn’t recount Paul’s death or provide a definitive conclusion. It’s as if the Church and its mission continue… and in reality, they continue in us. Now it is we who must continue proclaiming Jesus in our families, workplaces, universities, and daily lives.

Furthermore, as we approach Pentecost, this text reminds us that the Holy Spirit continues to sustain the Church. The same Spirit who gave Paul strength can also give us courage to speak with love, to not be ashamed of our faith, and to maintain hope even in difficult times.

And something very beautiful about this passage is that we are practically reaching the end of the Easter season. During these weeks, we have accompanied the nascent Church: we have seen Peter’s courage, Paul’s journeys, the conversions, the persecutions, and the constant action of the Holy Spirit.

And now, just as the Book of Acts ends with the mission still underway, we too prepare to celebrate Pentecost, where the Holy Spirit descends upon the Church to impel it to proclaim Christ to the world. Easter doesn't simply end as another date; it culminates by sending us to be courageous disciples, like Paul, bringing hope, faith, and love wherever we are.

Lord Jesus,
thank you because your Word never ceases. Even when I feel tired, limited, or burdened with problems, you remind me that I can still love, serve, and bear witness.

Give me a heart like Paul's, capable of trusting even in chains,
capable of speaking of you with courage and joy. May your Holy Spirit impel me to be a missionary, to not remain silent about what you are doing in my life, and to bring hope to those around me.

May I never lose faith in difficult times, and may my life also proclaim your Kingdom with complete freedom and without hindrance. Amen.

⚪ SEVENTH AND LAST FRIDAY OF EASTER ⚪

21:15-19

After Jesus had revealed himself to his disciples and eaten breakfast with them,
he said to Simon Peter,
"Simon, son of John, do you love me more than these?"
Simon Peter answered him, "Yes, Lord, you know that I love you."
Jesus said to him, "Feed my lambs."
He then said to Simon Peter a second time,
"Simon, son of John, do you love me?"
Simon Peter answered him, "Yes, Lord, you know that I love you."
He said to him, "Tend my sheep."
He said to him the third time,
"Simon, son of John, do you love me?"
Peter was distressed that he had said to him a third time,
"Do you love me?" and he said to him,
"Lord, you know everything; you know that I love you."
Jesus said to him, "Feed my sheep.
Amen, amen, I say to you, when you were younger,
you used to dress yourself and go where you wanted;
but when you grow old, you will stretch out your hands,
and someone else will dress you
and lead you where you do not want to go."
He said this signifying by what kind of death he would glorify God.
And when he had said this, he said to him, "Follow me."

This passage is one of the most powerful moments in the Gospel because it shows us that God's forgiveness isn't just pretending nothing happened, but rather its true meaning is to completely restore us to His love. Notice how Jesus asks Peter the same question three times.

Precisely the same number of times Peter had denied Him, and He doesn't do this to make him feel bad, but to give him the opportunity to heal each of his failings with a declaration of love. We must understand that our past is not an obstacle to what the future holds.

Sometimes we label ourselves as failures or feel that we are no longer worthy of following Christ because of the mistakes we make, but this text tells us that all Jesus needs to entrust us with a mission, a new mission, is for us to be honest in love, even if it is a fragile and half-hearted love; He doesn't look for perfect people, He looks for people who are willing to try again as many times as necessary.

Pope Francis teaches us something that is very grounding: “Jesus doesn’t ask extraordinary things of us, but rather that we open our hearts to him and trust him, saying: ‘Lord, here I am with my limitations, but I love you.’”

Jesus’ invitation remains the same: “Follow me.” He says this to Peter at the end. He also teaches us that faith translates into action; it is not enough to say that we want God, that we love him, but we must demonstrate it by caring for those around us, whether by listening to them, helping them, and ultimately doing what Jesus asks of us: shepherding his sheep.

Let us realize that we are not followers of Jesus because we are the best, but because he, knowing all our weaknesses, decided that it was worthwhile to give us one more chance after another, and to trust us again, because he loves us and will never stop doing so.

Brothers and sisters: Jesus addresses the following questions to us, weak and fragile as we are: Do you love me? May I guide you? Let our response—in word and deed—be a resounding and enthusiastic “yes.” May Almighty God confirm us in His love and bless us abundantly, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.

⚪ SEVENTH AND LAST FRIDAY OF EASTER ⚪

25:13b-21

King Agrippa and Bernice arrived in Caesarea
on a visit to Festus.
Since they spent several days there,
Festus referred Paul's case to the king, saying,
"There is a man here left in custody by Felix.
When I was in Jerusalem the chief priests and the elders of the Jews
brought charges against him and demanded his condemnation.
I answered them that it was not Roman practice
to hand over an accused person before he has faced his accusers
and had the opportunity to defend himself against their charge.
So when they came together here, I made no delay;
the next day I took my seat on the tribunal
and ordered the man to be brought in.
His accusers stood around him,
but did not charge him with any of the crimes I suspected.
Instead they had some issues with him about their own religion
and about a certain Jesus who had died
but who Paul claimed was alive.
Since I was at a loss how to investigate this controversy,
I asked if he were willing to go to Jerusalem
and there stand trial on these charges.
And when Paul appealed that he be held in custody
for the Emperor's decision,
I ordered him held until I could send him to Caesar."

Today's reading of Acts places us in a moment of political transition in Caesarea. The text presents a narrative tension that unfolds between several locations and various characters. Festus, having assumed the position of Roman procurator, is about to encounter a real "problem" left by the previous procurator, Felix.

This problem concerns Paul of Tarsus, who has been imprisoned for a long time, accused by the chief priests and Jewish elders who have demanded his death sentence. But Paul, as a Roman citizen, refuses to be tried in Jerusalem. He knows it will not be a fair trial, and therefore requests to be tried in a Roman emperor's court. “I appeal to Emperor” (25:11). With this response from Procurator Festus, we would expect his immediate transfer to Rome.

But it will not be so. The narrator of this book introduces a long digression in the story of Paul. God has plans that surprise us, sometimes amidst contradictions, prejudices, and dangers…we can discover and fulfill His plan for each of us. Paul trusts completely in the One who appeared on his path, stopped him in his tracks, and showed him the mission He had reserved for him. He knows that suffering will be present in his future.

Festus is experiencing great confusion. Since his arrival, he wants to be accepted by the Jews, facilitating coexistence, but he still has Paul's accusation and complaint pending. He has listened to the accusers, but he doesn't understand the content of what they are saying. He says he finds no grounds for a death sentence in Paul's actions. He must also prepare a report for the Emperor, sending it with Paul, yet he doesn't know what to say in the face of the contradictions he feels.

He takes advantage of King Agrippa's visit to Seeking guidance, he presents Paul's case to the king and is pleased by the king's interest in questioning him and seeing him the following day. Festus feels comforted and grateful. At last, he will be able to write his report and close Paul's case.

In this account, we find a certain parallel between the arrest, accusation, and trial that led Jesus to the cross and the one to which Paul is subjected. Paul, however, will not be condemned to death, but will preach in Rome, bearing witness to the risen Christ and the message of salvation for all humanity.

"Lord, grant us the courage and strength of Paul so that we may bear witness to You even in the most difficult times. May Your Holy Spirit guide us to speak of You regardless of a person's title or position. Amen."

⚪️ SÉPTIMO Y ÚLTIMO JUEVES DE PASCUA ⚪️

17, 20-26
