It’s a simple practice yet why don’t we do it more often?
I’ve learned that it is entirely possible to be grateful for where I am today and for what I currently have, while at the same time seek to achieve/accomplish more. (Step 1 is crucial to understand and practice before moving on to step 2). Finding gratitude for the experiences that shaped me into the person I am today while also having gratitude for the opportunities that allow me to improve and continue to become a better version of myself. Remember…when in doubt, repeat Step 1.
We live in a society where “more is better”, and “more equals more”. I’m not against achieving more or having intentional goals/desires for more. However I am not a big fan of the mental illness that “wanting more” brings with it. Why do we get distracted by society’s game of always wanting “more”. How often do you stop and think throughout your day about the things that you already have, through the lens of gratitude?
Awareness is the key. Recognizing when those stray thoughts slip in of wanting more that lead to anxiety, and comparison. I’ve learned to use those thoughts as a trigger to find gratitude for where I am today. Gratitude is like a muscle, the more you use it the stronger this emotional state becomes for you and the closest thing I’ve found to a super-power for humans. “More” is simply a by-product of an intentional pursuit.
