Community Health in Oaxaca, Mexico

Community Health in Oaxaca, Mexico This is a five week summer international service learning program.

Today, Rutgers is positioned at one end of a transnational migration corridor that extends from Oaxaca, a largely indigenous state in southern Mexico, to New Brunswick, NJ, a city with a diverse population including a rapidly growing number of migrants from southern Mexico. As part of a larger, multidisciplinary effort at Rutgers, called Transnational New Brunswick, this unique service learning op

portunity will aid in developing and expanding relationships with the Mexican community both in Mexico and New Jersey. The goal of the Public Health in Mexico program is to introduce students from Rutgers and other universities to community health issues. The program will consist of a seminar on health in Mexican communities, a course in medical Spanish, community service projects, and an integrative seminar to link the community activities to course readings.

FISL is a non-profit organization that awards scholarships to students enrolled in an international service-learning program. (What is service-learning?) We understand all too well the financial strain that some students face -- an obstacle that can make overseas travel seem impossible.
