The Imperfect Tense with “ESTABA” ⏳

“I was” in Spanish... let’s talk about the past!

—

🇪🇸 What is ESTABA?

Estaba means “I was” or “he/she was” – but for ongoing actions in the past.

Think of it as: “I was doing something” (and it wasn’t finished).

—

📝 Conjugation:

• Yo estaba – I was
• Tú estabas – You were
• Él/Ella estaba – He/She was
• Nosotros estábamos – We were
• Ellos estaban – They were

—

🎬 When to use ESTABA:

✅ Past actions with no clear end
✅ Describing scenes / background
✅ Ongoing past actions

—

🇪🇸 Examples:

• Estaba cansado ayer (I was tired yesterday)
• Estaba lloviendo cuando salí (It was raining when I left)
• Mi abuela estaba cocinando (My grandma was cooking)
• Nosotros estábamos en el parque (We were at the park)
• Ellos estaban viendo una película (They were watching a movie)

—

🎬 Story Time:

Ayer estaba en mi casa. Estaba viendo la tele cuando sonó el teléfono. Mi mamá estaba preocupada porque no contestaba. Pero yo solo estaba relajándome.

(Yesterday I was at home. I was watching TV when the phone rang. My mom was worried because I wasn’t answering. But I was just relaxing.)

—

💡 Compare with other past tense:

• Estaba en la fiesta = I was at the party (background, no end mentioned)
• Estuve en la fiesta = I was at the party (finished event)

Estaba = Ongoing / Estuve = Completed

—

🎯 Your turn!

Question Words in Spanish ❓

Who? What? Where? When? Why? How? Let’s learn them all!

🇪🇸 The Essential Question Words:

❓ ¿Qué? – What?
❓ ¿Quién? – Who?
❓ ¿Dónde? – Where?
❓ ¿Cuándo? – When?
❓ ¿Por qué? – Why?
❓ ¿Cómo? – How?
❓ ¿Cuál? – Which?
❓ ¿Cuánto? – How much?

💡 Quick Examples:

• ¿Qué haces? (What are you doing?)
• ¿Quién es ella? (Who is she?)
• ¿Dónde está el baño? (Where is the bathroom?)
• ¿Cuándo llegas? (When do you arrive?)
• ¿Por qué estudias español? (Why do you study Spanish?)

💡 Accent Marks Matter!

Without the accent, they mean something different:
• Qué = What? / Que = That
• Como = How? / Como = I eat / Like

💡 Pro Tip:

In Spanish, you need an upside-down question mark ¿ at the beginning AND a normal ? at the end!

✅ ¿Cómo estás?
❌ ~~Cómo estás?~~

🎯 Your turn!

Using TENER for States & Conditions 🌡️

In English you say “I AM hungry”... but in Spanish you say “I HAVE hunger”!

🇪🇸 Why TENER?

Spanish uses the verb TENER (to have) for physical sensations and needs because these are things you possess temporarily, not things you are.

🇪🇸 Common expressions with TENER:

🍽️ Tengo hambre – I’m hungry (I have hunger)
💧 Tengo sed – I’m thirsty (I have thirst)
🥶 Tengo frío – I’m cold (I have coldness)
🥵 Tengo calor – I’m hot (I have heat)
😴 Tengo sueño – I’m sleepy (I have sleepiness)
😨 Tengo miedo – I’m scared (I have fear)
⏰ Tengo prisa – I’m in a hurry (I have rush)
🎂 Tengo 25 años – I’m 25 years old (I have 25 years)

—

💡 The Pattern:

TENER + noun (not adjective like in English)

✅ Tengo hambre (I have hunger)
❌ ~~Soy hambre~~ (I am hunger)

✅ Tengo frío (I have cold)
❌ ~~Estoy frío~~ (I am cold – this sounds like your body is cold to touch!)

—

🎬 Examples:

• En México, tengo calor casi todo el año.
• Cuando nieva, tengo frío y tomo chocolate.
• Corrí 5 km y ahora tengo sed y hambre.
• Son las 11 pm y mañana trabajo temprano, tengo sueño.
• Veo una película de terror y tengo miedo.
• Llegué tarde a mi vuelo, tenía mucha prisa.

—

🎯 Your turn!

Tell me in the comments:

👉 ¿Qué tienes ahora? (What do you have now?)

Example: “Tengo hambre” or “Tengo sueño”
