Blessed Urs of Shaykh Nur al-Jerrahi - Lex Hixon

“We are not waiting, with hope or with fear, for some future evolution, of humanity or progress of history, for we know without doubt that the essential completeness, or freedom, longed for by all conscious beings, always exists here and now. Regardless of perceived suffering, there is spiritual plentitude right before our eyes, not only for some elite but for the people as a whole, for conscious life as a whole.”

LEX HIXON (1942-1995)

Greetings of Light!
We are celebrating the first anniversary of the Lex Hixon Center for Contemplative Studies, a mystical toddler, this Saturday, November 1st, with an extraordinary event. We are also honoring the death anniversary of Shaykh Nur Al Anwar al Jerrahi, (Lex Hixon), a contemporary Sufi master who founded the Nur Ashki Jerrahi Sufi Order in Mexico, with a concert of music rooted in spiritual realms and highly beneficial. On the one hand, the captivating beauty of the illahis (mystical hymns) and makams (musical scales unique to Turkey and the Arab world); on the other, the sonorous power of Tibetan singing bowls, instruments that have been used for centuries to help people anchor their attention in the present moment and increase their awareness.

We are immensely grateful to the director, Dr. Alejandra Gómez Colorado, and the staff of the National Museum of World Cultures for their kind collaboration on this important project for us at the Lex Hixon Center for Contemplative Studies. Thank you to all the soloists and groups who accepted our invitation to host this first edition of the World Sacred Music Festival in Mexico City. And our special gratitude to Ahmed al Jerrahi, musical director of the Nur Ashki Jerrahi Sufi Order of Mexico, for his inspiration in creating this event and giving it the best possible form and sound. See you next year, as we celebrate the second edition of the World Sacred Music Festival together.

The music of the Hare Krishna community, featuring traditional Hindustani musical instruments such as the tabla and harmonium, as well as mantra chanting, is an important part of this tradition's devotion. Chanting the Hare Krishna mantle is considered a direct means of connecting with divinity. Several of the community's musicians have studied in India.

Babou Diebaté, from Senegal, participant of the first edition of the Sacred World Music Festival hosted by the Lex Hixon Contemplative Studies Center at the National Museum of World Cultures in Mexico City's Historic Center.
In Africa, there is a tradition of troubadours known as "griots." Griots preserve stories and poetry, often set to music. They are also considered intermediaries between the physical and spiritual worlds and, as such, participate in traditional rites and ceremonies. Babou Diebaté is a griot originally from Senegal and a player of the kora, one of the most sophisticated handmade musical instruments in the world, both in its musical capabilities and the depth of its tradition.
