In last month’s newsletter we shared about the role of the adult in Forest School. Unlike a traditional classroom, in Forest School the teacher takes the role of guide, or co-adventurer, providing supervision, materials and open-ended questions to support the children’s thinking. The result is meaningful and authentic learning that sticks 🙌🏼
Spring Outdoor Explorers Camp is coming and we can’t wait to spend the week taking action to care for our Earth!!! 👏🏼🌎❤️

Semana Santa is coming and we can’t wait for a whole week of adventure - Outdoor Explorers style!!! For the month of April we like to celebrate the Earth *a little extra* by taking action to care for the planet. Spring Camp will be an opportunity for our outdoor explorers to learn how they can take action to care for their home, and get inspired by other kids who are making a difference around the world. As always, all our activities will be outdoors, with plenty of time for play and child-led projects.
Ages: 3-8 (Children under 3 can join with an adult)
Option to join by day or for the full week
Option to add an extra hour (for extra cost)

The other day I told a curious kiddo, “I almost never tell you “no, so if I’m telling you now, it’s because it’s something really important.” After a moment of thinking, he agreed.
It made me think of this quote ⬆️ and the importance of always asking ourselves, “Am I saying ‘no’ because it’s inconvenient or because it’s actually unsafe?” And if the answer is “inconvenient”, what learning experience are we depriving our kids of? 🤔
Here’s to all the fun that waits on the other side of “yes”!

February memories at Curious Kids Club!
The kids…
- found a wooden palette! Which became a “backpack sled” and later the roof of a house
- added an elaborate river system to the “house” and later flower “lights” and paint
- developed an alarm system which required measuring, tying, hanging and lots of revising
- made bird feeders with Cheerios as a gift for Valentine’s Day
- supported the park’s initiative to ask people not to feed the squirrels by creating signs in English, Spanish + pictures
- discovered new tree trunks to climb and balance on
- found ”dirt rocks” and used them for throwing, exploding and constructing
- listened to stories and learned about the life of Jane Goodall
- practiced mindful breathing strategies like Pizza Breath!
- found insects, climbed trees and got muddy, as always 😉

What does “play” mean for you? It’s not easy to dismantle our ideas about what play and learning actually look like, but using neuroscience we can see the connection more clearly.
The takeaway is that authentic, child-led play engages the brain and deepens learning more than any other activity! Of course we can’t live in a play bubble forever, but it’s crucial to intentionally create space for children to have time for this style of play. Their brains will thank you!
