Hyperlexia is MORE than just early reading. ⬇️
It's just the tip of the iceberg, so to speak.
Dismissing hyperlexia as "just early reading" leaves you with an incomplete picture, missing many of the other important traits shown on this iceberg.
Remember, hyperlexia is NOT a single trait.
It's defined by "a cluster of characteristics" as the Canadian Hyperlexia Association has outlined.
When hyperlexia is reduced to a single trait like this, it can lead to inappropriate goals or accommodations, inadequate support, unrealistic expectations, dismissal of parental concerns, minimizing the challenges faced by hyperlexic kids, misidentification, perpetuating myths, misinformation, and so much more.
This also means that not all early readers are hyperlexic. A specific group of characteristics has to be present in order for it to be hyperlexia and, yes, there are lots of differences between hyperlexic readers and other early readers.
