More advise on giving twice exceptional students the opportunity to succeed.

4. Let these children know that many people who have had similar problems have become successful, such as Woodrow Wilson, Thomas Edison, Nelson Rockefeller, and many others.

5. Find alternative ways of doing learning tasks. For example, allow children who have great difficulty writing to take tests orally, or, perhaps teach them typing or word word processing. For children who have difficulty taking notes, recording could be used.

6. Adjust the homework or classwork for a learning disabled gifted child. A child with poor eye-hand coordination has to work extremely hard to do some tasks, such as worksheets, and cannot complete as much work as an average child can within a specified period of time. Assign only what the child can reasonably finish in the allotted time. It is a mistake to punish children for not completing work they cannot do.

7. Encourage altruism by providing opportunities for these children to get involved in tutoring and to assist in various projects. Such activities entrance children’s self images.

8. The development of a positive self-image is extremely important, so it is essential that these children experience some success each day. Parents and teachers should be generous with positive reinforcement and avoid negative comments.

9. Parents should not carry a burden of guilt about their child’s failure. They should keep a positive outlook and genuinely enjoy their child as a person who has many different capabilities.
