This is funny because there's just enough truth in it to make every travel ball parent a little edgy. 😂
I am not anti-travel sports, good programs can offer better coaching, increased competition, and create awesome memories and memories and opportunities that kids simply wouldn't get in a local rec league.
But somewhere along the way it stopped being an outlier and became the default.
A perfectly ordinary youth baseball weekend now includes a $500 tournament fee, 3 tanks of gas, 2 nights in a hotel, dinner for the whole family and a Sunday drive home at 9:30pm...so 2 teams from neighboring towns can play each other 4 hours away from either.
And the economics of it are fascinating.
Once enough families believe in the value of more travel = more development for their kids, the whole system grinds itself into a higher gear as everyone feels the pressure to not be the parent whose kid "falls behind".
So the entire system becomes more expensive, more time consuming and more intense even if the actual on field baseball isn't dramatically better.
There absolutely are kids that need better competition.
But I think we have reached the point where we have to ask ourselves if every 11 year old really needs a regional development plan and a Marriott Bonvoy number.
Sometimes the best game available is 20 minutes down the road.
