Congrats to the 21 researchers from the University of Groningen & UMCG who have been awarded a Veni grant of up to €320.000 💶

A Veni grant is a personal scientific research grant provided by the Dutch Research Council (NWO) for early-career scientists. It is part of the NWO Talent Programme, alongside the Vidi and Vici grants, designed to help researchers who have recently earned their PhD build independent research lines.

of Groningen

Congratulations to the twenty-one researchers from the University of Groningen and the UMCG that have been awarded a Veni-grant!

It was given to:
- Leon Bäcker, Serte Donderwinkel, Gustavo Medina Toledo, Pooneh Nazari, Jakob Schoeffer, Fabian Schuhmann, Suzanne van der Veldt, Wouter Kiekens, Vesna Bacheva, and Sebastian Hendrickx-Rodriguez from the Faculty of Science and Engineering.
- Jamil Nehme, Aranka Vivienne Ballering, and Laura Bustamante from UMCG.
- Defne Abur, Lucas van der Deijl, Alex Lorson, and Ezra la Roi from the Faculty of Arts.
- Anja Ernst and Joost de Jong from the Faculty of Behavioural and Social Sciences.
- Kamil Majcherek from the Faculty of Philosophy.
- Kritika Saxena from the Faculty of Economics and Business.

The grant, up to €320.000, is designed for outstanding researchers who have recently gained a PhD. The topics of research include the Milky Way’s history, how caloric restriction prevents cancer, AI decision-making, speech irregularities in Parkinson’s disease, the speed of our brains, Rwanda’s land reform and women’s empowerment, and many more.

Together with the Vidi and Vici grants, it is part of the NWO Talent Programme from the Dutch Research Council (NWO). They select researchers based on the academic quality and the innovative character of the research proposal, the scientific and/or societal impact of the proposed project, and the quality of the researcher.

Project KORSTMOS at Radboud University is a great and very interesting project!

'From a young age I watched documentaries like those of National Geographic and wanted to know how everything worked. Even as a child, I found the universe fascinating. I grew up in Lebanon and already knew back then that I would come to Nijmegen to study physics and astronomy. My father is Dutch, my mother Lebanese. Because the bachelor's programme is taught in Dutch, I first took a year to learn the language at Radboud In'to Languages.

Now I'm doing an internship at KORSTMOS, a project on cosmic radiation. The Earth is continuously bombarded by particles from space, and we still don't know exactly where they come from. When they hit the atmosphere, they trigger an avalanche of new particles. We measure these at the setup behind the Huygens building. It holds various detectors, such as scintillator detectors in a ski case, a radio mast with antennas, and Cherenkov detectors in an oil drum filled with water. With these detectors we can estimate the properties of the cosmic radiation.

We notice nothing of these cosmic particles down on the ground. The Earth is protected by its magnetic field and the atmosphere, which absorbs most of the radiation. But imagine you were out in space, then the chance of DNA mutations in your body would be much greater. So we may well be grateful for our atmosphere.

What's great is that KORSTMOS is also meant for secondary education. Pupils can come to us with questions about cosmic radiation, for instance for their profielwerkstuk (final research project), and for teachers there are lesson materials and measuring setups for the classroom. I love that pupils don't just get theory here, but can actually take measurements at the setup themselves.

I mainly work on the scintillators that measure the particles from the particle avalanche. With at least three detectors (scintillators) we can determine the direction of the particles, and I calculate the uncertainty in that through simulations. I get a lot of energy from discussing ideas with my supervisor and fellow students. It's wonderful to see how someone else looks at the same problem: something new always comes up.'

Two languages. One University.

🌍 Two Languages. One University.

The University of Twente is an international and inclusive community where everyone can fully participate. That is why both Dutch and English are the official working languages at UT, following the principle of parallel bilingualism.

But what does this mean in practice? When do you use which language, and where can you go with questions?

We would love to talk to you about it during Language Policy on Tour. From13 to 16 July, we will visit different locations on campus with a pop-up information point.

💬 Ask your questions
🧠 Check myths vs. facts
📄 Find practical information about language policy and support
🎁 And pick up a small giveaway

📍 Where & when:
Monday 13 July | 12:00–14:00 | Vrijhof / Bastille Boulevard
Tuesday 14 July | 12:00–14:00 | O&O Square
Wednesday 15 July | 12:00–14:00 | TechMed Centre
Thursday 16 July | 12:00–14:00 | Spiegel

No registration needed; feel free to stop by, even if you only have a few minutes.

We hope to see you there!
