"It’s important to learn from Jugodan who have the ability to keep learning themselves."

Real martial arts were developed during a period when soldiers wore armour and fought in mortal combat on the battlefield. Many of the techniques we practise today have their origins in this environment.

We should remember that such techniques were not created for sport or competition, but for survival in life-and-death encounters where weapons were present and the battlefield itself was a significant factor.

As Sōke Hatsumi explains:

“In a similar way, the schools’ techniques were adapted to the region where they were developed (geography and nature of the ground). It is a fact that you don’t fight in the same way in a muddy rice field, on the steep slope of a rocky mountain, on a sandy beach, in a bamboo forest, or inside a house. The Kukishinden school has kamae (fighting stances) that are very low and stable. This comes from the fact that one of the origins of this ryū’s techniques comes from the navy (Kuki Suigun), and when you are fighting on a boat, stability is of the essence.”

The environment, terrain, armour, weapons, and tactical realities of the time all influenced the development of classical martial traditions. To understand the techniques fully, we must also understand the conditions in which they were born.
