Dear Parents,
This is an honest and open letter from a middle school teacher who has been at this for nearly 30 years.
I began teaching well before the age of laptops and tablets and iPhones and social media and google classrooms and Zoom.
I began teaching well before millennial and screen time and remote learning and streaming and You tube and binge watching were part of the lexicon.
I suspect I am a relic.
I have not changed my approach much over the course of my time in the classroom. With the ever increasing explosion of technology in the classroom and at the ready, it is rarely my go to for teaching.
I do not think more screen time for a child is a good thing. So, to have them spend more time in front of a screen in my classroom, is difficult for me to justify.
But times have changed.
And, I am not even remotely prepared for how to now teach your children remotely.
So while the new generation of teachers are onboard and ready to go, sending their videos and tik toks and partaking in google hangouts and the like, this change has caused a few moments of discomfort for this veteran teacher.
Please know this. I am working hard right now and doing everything I can to get myself up to speed, so I may continue to help educate your child during this difficult time.
Because that is what teachers do. No matter what is put before us, we find a way. Always.
But please, also know this.
After 30 years, there are some fundamental beliefs I have about teaching and learning and children that still apply, whether a child is sitting in my classroom or sitting at home to learn.
I share them with you now. I hope they will help you navigate through this time, and beyond.
1. Do not do battle over learning: it should not be a point of frustration or tension between you and your child.
2. Limit time in front of the screen, even for learning. Do 45 minutes of math, then power down. Don’t power through. Give their brain a break. Send them off to play. That’s real.
3. Do real math and real science: bake cookies. That’s fractions and conversions and measurements and mixtures and reading for comprehension and the scientific method and sequencing and heat energy and calories and problem-solving. That’s real.
4. Do real language arts: have them fill out a job application and write a cover letter and prepare a resume and then interview them for their dream job. Have them write thank you letters and letters to grandma and letters to their congressman. That’s real.
5. Do real art: make fruit jello and paint sunsets and write poetry and build bridges and plant flowers and sing love songs and dance. That’s real.
6. Read, read, read: read to your child, have them read to you. Have them read aloud. Have them read silently. But read. That’s real.
7. Good teaching is just good parenting: remember this above all else. Care for them, believe in them, calm them, help them grow, challenge them, hug them, keep them safe, love them. That’s really what we do.
I suspect I am a relic.
A teacher from an earlier time, perhaps now outdated. But I think children still need to be children.
Times have not changed that much.
