Green Macaw Expedition
The green macaw, also known as "military macaw" or Ara militaris, is a beautiful bird belonging to the group of psittacines, which also includes parrots, parrots and parakeets, among others. It is distributed in small populations from Mexico to northern Argentina. It is considered endangered and its trade, transfer and any type of affectation to the species and its habitat is prohibited.
In Oaxaca there are three population groups and it is considered that the region of the Oaxacan Cañada is one of the largest in all of America and is the only one of the three Oaxacan populations that has been studied fin the last 22 years.
Due to its great cultural and biological wealth, the region we will visit has been included in the Tehuacán - Cuicatlán Biosphere Reserve (1998), and a part of it is recognized as a natural and cultural heritage of humanity by UNESCO (2018).
This expedition is part of the Oaxaquia Project: communalism, art and nature. This initiative contributes to the investigation and conservation of the species and ecosystems of Oaxaca that deserve special care, emphasizing the green macaw, wild mushrooms, sea turtles, crocodiles and other species, as well as the ecosystems where they live, combining academic biological knowledge and community knowledge. This visit to the reproduction area of the green macaw is carried out in coordination with the Commissariat of Communal Property of Santa María Tecomavaca.
Goals:
➢ Observe the military macaw in its natural habitat during its reproductive stage and
know the most relevant aspects of its biological cycle.
➢ Learn about the biocultural importance of the reserve and learn about the actions that have been carried out for the protection of the species, the current state of its population and the threats it faces.
➢ Experience a harmonious interaction with the macaws and their ecosystem.
➢ Promote the 1st. Conference on inter-community evaluation of 23 years of conservation and research on the military macaw in the Cañada Region.

Expedition considerations
The presence of the military macaw in the wild is, in itself, a high-quality indicator of the ecosystems that support it. For this reason, we must go well prepared for a successful interaction that harmonizes our energy with a species and an ecosystem that deserve to continue to exist fully.
Cap or hat (in both cases, the colors must be very discreet: green or beige, military type, straw color, and so on...)
Tennis shoes or boots
Water
Clothes
Food
Binoculars
Photography and video
Lamp
support poles (with adequate traction for sloping and somewhat rocky terrain.)
Due to the climate of the region we must go up well hydrated and it is recommended with 2.5 liters of water in our backpack in containers that are not for single use. Remember: harmony and respect for nature go hand in hand. Likewise, very very discreet colors that protect your arms and neck from the sun so that you avoid the use of sunscreen as much as possible.
Remember that we will start the day at half past four in the morning, and we will have breakfast in a place of high energy and natural harmony. I recommend fruit, cereals, seeds, coffee, juices, etc.
Although the macaws pass close to us, it is recommended to take binoculars to observe more details of nature. If you have them, if not, you will still appreciate the experience very much. The site is ideal for getting good photos and videos of the macaws and the landscape. So take advantage. You should never use flash.
Although dawn will be very close, we will start the ascent in the dark, so it is recommended that you bring a small lamp or a well-charged cell phone. If you need support poles to ascend or descend, the community will provide you with a support pole obtained from the "Haces Vasculars” which are internal structures of roofs that have finished their life cycles.
Backpack
As you may have already realized, you will have to ascend with many things, in addition to your water and food, so you have to be very intelligent and efficient, making sure that they are small so that you can carry them in your small backpack, which also has to be colored very very discreetly.
Costs
$1,900.00 (one thousand nine hundred Mexican pesos) with a minimum of 6 people and a maximum of 10 people.
Includes regional transportation, community access fee, payment of a community guide, lodging, and basic itacate for breakfast in the mountains (fruit, cereals, water, coffee, energy bars, and juice).
