Crossing Borders: The Pilgrimage of San Francisco Xavier to Magdalena, Sonora

For more than 300 years, pilgrims from Mexico and the United States have traveled by foot and horseback to Magdalena, Sonora, to honor San Francisco Xavier and fulfill personal vows of faith.

This talk explores the fascinating history behind this binational tradition, its connections to Jesuit missionary Eusebio Francisco Kino, Spain, and the Indigenous, Mexican, and Mexican-American communities who continue to participate. More than a religious pilgrimage, the journey offers a powerful example of how culture, faith, and shared history can transcend political borders—and how the borderlands can be a place of connection rather than division.

Alex La Pierre is the director and co-founder of Borderlandia, a bi-national organization committed to building public understanding of the borderlands. A public historian, his experience spans the nonprofit sector in Nogales and government work with the National Park Service in New Mexico and Arizona, focusing on historic preservation and heritage interpretation. His studies and continued research center on the Hispanic cultural heritage of the American Southwest and northern Mexico.

🇲🇽 🇪🇸 South of Arizpe, Sonora, Mexico there is the ruins of a small 18th century chapel dedicated to the Virgin of Arantzazu, an apparition of the Virgin Mary in the Basque country.

👏 We had the chance to visit the original location of the Marian apparition near Oñati and share this unique sanctuary with our guests on our Basque Borderlands tour.

⛪️ It's a very special place where even the founder of the Jesuit order, San Ignacio de Loyola made a pilgrimage to.

🏡A favorite site we have visited so far where the incredible nature meets the amazing architecture of this important religious place.

🌃 Wow, what a night! Over 500 tickets sold for the world primere of our documentary Documenting the Anza Trail by bike !

🌉 It was a full house at the beautiful historic Presidio Theatre and we got a standing ovation at the end.

🌙 We were enchanted feeling the audience travel along on Luis Valle's incredible journey recreating the 1,600 mile Anza National Historic Trail. And we loved hearing from the guests at the after party.

🔥 Viva Anza, Luis, and this incredible journey and story that commemorates this feat!

🐴 Vayan Subiendo!! (Saddle up!) was the morning order from Juan Bautista de Anza to start each day en route to San Francisco from what is now Sonora, Mexico.

🌉 We made it to the city by the bay yesterday to be a part of the world primere of the Anza 250 documentary!

👏 We are very excited to be here, especially today because September 17, 1776 was the founding date of the San Francisco Presidio by the Anza expedition - 250 years ago to the day!

🏡 We are going to have a full house tonight with over 500 tickets sold at the historic Presidio Theater.

🥳 The time has come! Anza 250: A Documentary Film will be premiering at the historic Presidio Theatre in a few weeks.

🚲Follow Luis Valle Cordero's journey biking the Anza Trail on the 250th anniversary of the expedition. He traveled 1,200 miles along the expedition's route from present-day Sonora, Mexico, to San Francisco. Luis, the filmmaker, and producer will be in attendance!

🚢 How did our Arizona-Sonora borderlands come to have a deep Basque heritage in the first place?

⚓️ The Basques were the world's best sailors, shipbuilders and military men in the 16th century, serving as the tip of the lance in Spanish explorations.

🌎 They propelled the world into the globalization we know live and breathe, through their construction of what was the space shuttle of their times, a ship which fused northern European and Mediterranean building styles and capable of making transatlantic voyages.

🌊 In fact, many believe the Basques reached America well before Columbus even had the idea. They were just really good at keeping secrets!

⛵️ That's what brought our delegation to Albaola Itsas Kultur Faktoria in the harbor town of Pasaia facing the Bay of Biscay. It's an incredible heritage project that resulted in the reconstruction of the San Juan, a ship you may recall from the cover of National Geographic. They found this wreck off the coast of Labrador, Canada in the 1980s. A vestige of the important whaling industry that pushed the Basques across the seas.

🔥 We experienced an incredible tour there, that brought to live this fascinating nautical history. A true piece of the puzzle in our celebration of this Basque heritage.
