Happy Wednesday everyone! Today it’s cold in Guanajuato, so we recommend going out warmly dressed to enjoy the weather, or perhaps staying at home with a hot chocolate and some blankets is a better option.
Remember that this month we’ll have special promotions, and right now we’re offering discounts on our online Spanish classes.

Happy Tuesday everyone! Today in Mexico, we start the celebration of las posadas, and here we explain what they are all about.
In Mexico, Las Posadas are a traditional celebration that takes place every year from December 16th to December 24th. This festivity represents the biblical journey of Maria and Jose as they searched for shelter before the birth of Jesus. The word posada means lodging, symbolizing the places where they asked for refuge.
The tradition began in the 16th century, during the colonial period, when Spanish missionaries introduced it as a way to teach religious values and Christian history to indigenous communities. Over time, Las Posadas became a deeply rooted cultural and social celebration throughout Mexico.
Each night, people gather in homes, streets, or neighborhoods to reenact the journey. The celebration usually includes a procession, where participants sing traditional verses asking for shelter, followed by a response from those inside the house. Once the doors are opened, the celebration begins.
Food and drink play an important role during Las Posadas. Typical foods include tamales, pozole, buñuelos, and seasonal fruits. A very popular drink is ponche, a warm fruit punch made with ingredients such as guava, apple, sugar cane, cinnamon, and sometimes tejocote. For adults, it may also be served with a splash of alcohol.
Another key element of Las Posadas is the piñata, traditionally shaped like a star with seven points, which represent the seven deadly sins. Breaking the piñata symbolizes overcoming temptation, and it is especially enjoyed by children.
Las Posadas are not only a religious celebration, but also a time for community, family, and togetherness. They reflect the importance of hospitality, generosity, and sharing values that remain central to Mexican culture today.
At Falcon Language School, we believe that learning a language also means understanding its culture. Celebrations like Las Posadas help our students connect more deeply with Mexican traditions and history.
