What does Bosnia and Herzegovina’s path towards EU accession reveal about the European Union’s own values?

In this episode of the ValEUs podcast Beyond Borders: Navigating EU Foreign Policy, David Orlov (Nazarbayev University) speaks with Nina Sajić, Assistant Professor and Chair of the Department of Political Science at the University of Banja Luka, about Bosnia and Herzegovina’s EU accession path and the contestations surrounding European values in the Western Balkans. Drawing on Nina Sajić’s research, the discussion explores the culture of dependency fostered by long-term international oversight, the challenges of building a federal spirit in post-Dayton Bosnia and Herzegovina, and the external relations of sub-state actors.

The episode also raises a broader question: Does the European Union genuinely uphold the values it prescribes for itself and others?
