How was national power distributed in the Global South at the end of the Cold War? Which countries rose as regional powers, and which entered trajectories of decline or stagnation?
A new analysis based on the World Power Index (WPI) looks back to 1992, a year marked by the dissolution of the Soviet bloc, the emergence of new states, and deep transformations in Latin America, Africa, Asia, and the Middle East.
The study published by Cidob Barcelona shows that while Brazil, Argentina, Mexico, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and South Africa consolidated their national power, other countries faced weakness and instability that limited their role in the international system.
Unlike most existing power indices, the WPI makes it possible to examine not only the entire post–Cold War period but also much of the Cold War itself, offering a unique long-term perspective on world transformations.
This historical lens is not only about the past: it helps us understand today’s debates on multipolarity and the evolving role of the Global South in world geopolitics.
