In summer 2018, Tahlequah (J35), a Southern Resident orca, lost her newborn calf and carried the body with her instead of letting it sink.

For at least 17 days she swam through the Salish Sea, traveling about 1,000 miles, balancing the calf on her head or pushing it with her snout, diving to retrieve it when it slipped away.
