A method I used to do to learn English was to listen my favorite shows in English, even if I didn't understand anything at all. It was a slow process that eventually helped me out to understand natives in a better way. Maybe TV shows aren't your type of learning sometimes listening to your favorite music, and reading the lyrics at the same time can help you better. It depends on the type of person that you are.

English is an interesting language, from my own opinion it allows people to amplify their communication with Americans, or other foreigners that also speak the language, it allows you to understand books, movies, and cartoons.
