I Have Not Learned the Target Language: What to Do About It

One of the reasons we may not achieve the expected learning outcomes when trying hard to learn a new language is the lack of consistency.

Many of us have tried to learn a new language. Some have reached their goal, while others are still waiting for the moment they will manage to write and speak complete sentences in the target language. What the latter group experiences is frustrating, given that many would argue they have spent time and money to learn a new way to communicate with others, but nothing has delivered results.

In my experience working with many groups online and offline, I have observed that while many people try hard, the issue is that many give up too early. I believe that achieving results in the learning process is not that different from other activities. In other words, we do not reach what Malcolm Gladwell discusses in his book "The Tipping Point."

The tipping point is that moment when we start seeing results; however, there is no definite timeframe for when this may happen. It may take you three to six months to lose five kilograms, or a year to land an important client for your new business, and so on. The bottom line is that we need consistency when it comes to learning a new language. Do you think you would see a six-pack if you went to the gym once a week and trained for an hour? I believe you know the answer. The same applies to learning—we need to give enough attention and dedication if we want to reach our intended goal.
