🌼 🍄 ☀️ It’s the small moments. 🌼 🍄 ☀️

We are often inside in these hot summer days. Boredom happens, but so does a little bit of magic if you let it.

It is important to show children that not every moment in life is exciting. There are quiet times. But during those times we should stop to notice all the magical things around us that are rooted in daily life. These moments are also very special. Take time to notice them.

🧶 🪡 Just over here trying to use social media for educational purposes …. Like finding this adorable vest pattern from DreaReneeKnits !

What a lovely pattern and the color combos are endless. I used malabrigo rios in colorways solis and lettuce and Berroco Yarn Berroco Vellina Yarn for the middle stripe. Very fun project.

Let’s learn new things y’all. Use your brains and put that phone down now. Put those hands to work in a better way.

🏠 Secular Homeschool Curriculums 📖
What’s the best ?

Everyone’s favorite subject… CURRICULUM!! This is a wild topic for homeschool families. Everyone is trying to push their favorite and I get it. Some curriculums are superior, but honestly- they aren’t always going to be followed religiously in the homeschool environment. Because we have the ability to flow and evolve with our children’s learning more than in a classroom- I feel it’s more realistic to pic and choose from curriculums and living texts to accommodate as needed.

Disclaimer- this is all my opinion based on my experiences. You can teach however best works for your family. But if you find yourself like me - buying curriculums and finding yourself not using them halfway through the year- this is for you.

Some of the curriculums that we use have been

1. Treehouse Preschool - Charlotte Mason inspired literature based preschool

2. Waldorf Essentials - great for integrating more Waldorf based traditions

3. Simply Waldorf - online curriculums with great resources

4. Fix it grammar

5. Singapore Math

6. Niños en Nature - Español .and.nature

7. 180 days for Science and other subjects like social studies.

🖼️ Where does learning happen? 📖 🌳

Nature is our favorite teacher. If you slow down to notice her, you will find so much more.

Places like The Contemporary Austin Laguna Gloria are immersed in nature and art- our two favorite things.

📚 Debating homeschooling as an option for your family ? Here are some tips to get you started 🏠

Check state and local standards to see what’s required. Every state is different.

Make sure your spouse is onboard. My husband is the best assistant I could ask for and he helps with everything he can. It would be much harder if he didn’t.

Figure out your teaching philosophy.

Figure out your kids strengths- this will allow you to differentiate whatever curriculum you choose to their learning style.

Find your rhythm. Kids thrive when they know what to expect. I don’t roll with the unschooling mentality. We can all be more productive with guidance.

Hope this is helpful. Stay tuned because the next one will be about CURRICULUM!! 🤪

☀️ Enjoying our slow summers ☀️

This summer has been a sweet time to reflect and relax. Our kids are growing and enjoying time with their friends. They get bored. They have fun. They are exploring the dynamics of friendship in a safe place while still learning and incorporating academics.

Summer is a great time for kids to chill. Let’s allow them to unwind from the fast schedules of the school year.

We can do more for our kiddos than any expensive camp by just being with them and acknowledging them without making them feel as they are a burden.

Please let them be bored before you give the a screen. These childhood years are so fleeting and it’s so important to get those small slow moments in before the grow up.

☕️ Tea Time Together 🫖

Tea time is a great way to bring family and friends together to discuss poets, artists, composers, history and more. This tradition can be very fun and powerful in a homeschool setting.

We had integrated tea parties into our rhythm at the beginning of the year but the kids soon only seemed to care about the snacks🤣 After looking for more resources I found an amazing curriculum that was ready to go filled with everything I could imagine. The best part was that I didn’t have to plan it myself.

🌍 The best teacher 👩‍🏫

A pillar of my life and homeschool is nature. I hope that it is a part of yours too.

With our technology obsession many have forgotten about their connections to nature. I believe this has a lot to do with the current state of mental health of ourselves and our children.

As a kid I faced some hard challenges and found solace time and time again in nature. It reminded me that we are all part of something bigger. It made me feel like I belonged.

Let’s reconnect to nature and teach our kids about the beauty and importance of it all.

📚 Leaving my teaching career 👩‍🏫

I was in the school environment my whole life. Since I was five years old I went through public school education, university, then back to public schools to teach, followed by international private schools and then back to US private schools. That was all I knew.

But I grew frustrated with it. Seeing how schools failed certain kids (especially boys) over and over again. How children just longed to be in the comfort of their own homes instead of a school from 7am-6pm everyday. I began to question it all and explore alternative education.

When my first son was born I couldn’t imagine him being in a school setting. We wanted him to become a free thinker. We decided to go for homeschooling e because it felt so natural.

No more practicing for shooting drills. No more rush hour traffic. No more meetings with parents who are mad because their children aren’t achieving perfect scores on their standardized tests. It has also allowed me to lower my shield and enjoy education as it’s meant to be. Not allow it to be encroached upon by outside sources.

Is it easy? No way. It’s as much if not more work than being in the school classroom. I opened an in home daycare to be able to do it as well. But guess what? We have the freedom to learn as we please and we are safe everyday.

My nervous system and my family are forever thankful for this opportunity. Time with my kids. Time to protect their childhood and allow them to enjoy it. They grow so fast and they will soon be adults with jobs just like the rest. But my hope is that they will see things differently.
