Language is far more than a collection of words and rules. Every time we communicate, several layers of language work together; from the sounds we produce to the social beliefs and cultural assumptions behind our words. This all happens below the threshold of consciousness.
This diagram offers a great way of visualising those layers:
Phonology → Grammar → Semantics → Register → Genre → Ideology
Phonology:
At the centre is phonology, the study of how sounds are organised within a language and how they contribute to differences in meaning.
Grammar:
Beyond sound lies grammar: the patterns and principles that allow us to form words, phrases and sentences. This includes areas such as morphology and syntax.
Semantics:
Semantics concerns meaning. It asks how words, expressions and sentences convey ideas—and how different linguistic structures can shape interpretation.
Register:
Language also changes according to context. Register refers to the varieties of language we use depending on factors such as audience, situation and purpose. We do not normally speak to a close friend in the same way we write an academic article.
Genre:
Genre concerns recognisable types of communication, such as news reports, advertisements, poems, scientific papers and political speeches. Each has its own typical structures and conventions.
Ideology:
At the broadest level, language is connected to society. Ideology concerns the beliefs, values and assumptions that can be reflected, and sometimes reinforced, through our linguistic choices.
The central idea is that language can be studied at many interconnected levels. A single utterance can be analysed as a pattern of sounds, a grammatical structure, a carrier of meaning, a choice suited to a particular context, part of a particular genre and even a reflection of wider social ideas, and that's why language is powerful.
