Like the early Nazarenes, I and the Living Miracles community share a deep devotion to Jesus and His Teachings. We also share property among us as a group, along with using 2 basic principles to guide our lives: No people pleasing and No private thoughts. These principles are part of the practical application of mind training using the Workbook lessons of A Course In Miracles and the teachings of Jesus Christ. It can be called modern day Mysticism in Action.

This Saturday’s movie:
The Giver
Community | Discover True Identity | Fear | Forgiveness | Letting Go of Control | Mind Training | Purpose | Repression | Secrets | Teacher/Student
“Do I desire a world I rule instead of one that rules me? Do I desire a world where I am powerful instead of helpless? Do I desire a world in which I have no enemies and cannot sin? And do I want to see what I denied because it is the truth?” (T-21.VII.6) The final question can only be answered with an unequivocal yes, because awareness of truth is total. It is the end of illusions.
In a seemingly perfect community, without war, pain, suffering, differences, or choice, Jonas is to be the next “Giver.” This means that he will be given access to memories and emotions that the rest of the population do not have, so that he will be able to develop the ability to offer guidance and support from a higher perspective.
Jonas begins his mind training process with his mentor and soon realizes that the world that he has grown up in is highly controlled and based on repression of memory and emotion. Without emotion and the practice of inner listening, the barometer for right and wrong, ego and Spirit, is not accessible, and there is no way to develop inner discernment and spiritual awareness. As he opens his mind with the willingness to remember (to face the unconscious), many thoughts, emotions and beliefs arise. Jonas experiences joy and pain, love and fear, memories of birth and death, profound loss, and profound gratitude.
Jonas is deeply affected by his emotional experiences and soon realizes that although his world has eliminated fear, chaos, and the awareness of death, it has also eliminated love and freedom. As his awareness deepens he sees things from a different perspective, and there is no doubt in his mind that a world without love cannot be the real world. He deeply desires to set the captives free, and his loyalty shifts immediately from the family concept and obedience to the rules of this world, to awakening.
In the Awakening journey, Jonas must go out beyond the boundaries of the sleeping mind to reach the full awareness of the real world. It only takes One to Awaken.
The central premise is the transition from a state of ego-driven control and emotional suppression to one of 100% dependency on God. The analysis explores the nature of the "split mind," the mechanics of projection, and the necessity of taking absolute responsibility for one’s state of mind.
The projected world—symbolized by the controlled society in The Giver—functions as a defense against the "double oblivion" of the unconscious mind. True healing requires the release of social roles, the undoing of private thoughts, and the courageous exploration of suppressed emotions to return to the "law of love."
-------------------------------------------------
Core Themes of Spiritual Dependency
100% Dependency on God and the Holy Spirit
The foundational theme of the discourse is the shift from being "outside in" to "inside out." This involves a total reliance on internal instruction and intuition rather than external circumstances.
* The Key to Guidance: God-dependency means wanting to be guided and directed by an inner voice rather than personal will.
* The Inner/Outer Paradox: While spiritual beginners distinguish between the "inner world" and "outer world," advanced awareness reveals that the two are identical.
* Guidance vs. Manifesting: True guidance is not about manifesting better material circumstances (yachts, raises, or soul mates), but about using symbols of the past to reach the "Holy Instant" or revelatory light.
Absolute Responsibility for State of Mind
Waking up requires the cessation of the "blame game."
* Ending Projection: Individuals must refuse to pin their upsets on false causes such as weather, politics, partners, or disease.
* The Sole Responsibility: According to the text, the only responsibility of a "teacher of God" is to accept the "Atonement"—the correction of the mind—for themselves.
* The Projection of Responsibility: The world is a projection of the mind's responsibility. The ego uses external obligations (to family, jobs, or country) to maintain a sense of guilt and keep the mind from accepting its true power.
The Nature of Emotion and Spiritual Healing
* The Problem of Repression: The primary obstacle to spiritual progress is not the intensity of joy or pain, but the act of hiding and repressing these emotions into the unconscious.
* Awareness as a Catalyst: One cannot release or heal what is denied or hidden from awareness. Spiritual healing requires a direct encounter with one's feelings.
* The Intensity of Experience: While feelings can be overwhelming, the document asserts that they are not the inherent problem; rather, the "denial of awareness" prevents the liberation of the mind.
Metaphysical Analysis: The Split Mind and Projection
The Concept of "Double Oblivion"
The mind exists in a state of "double jeopardy" or "double oblivion" due to the belief in separation from God.
* The Basement Analogy: The unconscious mind is like a dark basement filled with "black cobwebs" (dark thoughts and terrors).
* The Hidden Light: By pushing dark thoughts into the unconscious to avoid the "time of terror" (separation), the mind also pushed the light of heaven beneath that darkness, making both inaccessible to normal awareness.
* Double Jeopardy: The mind is oblivious to its own identity (the Light) and oblivious to the intense darkness it is hiding (the Ego).
The Mechanics of Projection
Projection is described as an "ingenious trick" to see outside what one refuses to face inside.
* Disowning Thoughts: Whatever is projected is disowned; the individual judges another as "different" to exclude themselves from their own self-attack.
* The Kaleidoscope Effect: Looking at the world and seeing anger, envy, or jealousy in others is an attempt to keep those qualities in the mind without forgiving them.
* The Ultimate Realization: Spiritual awakening is the realization that "there is nothing outside of you."
-------------------------------------------------
Analysis of "The Giver" as a Metaphor for the Ego's World
The film The Giver serves as a visual representation of a "constructed community" designed to minimize the threat of deep, chaotic emotions.
The Mechanics of Control in Society
The society in the movie reflects the ego’s attempt to bring order to the chaos of the unconscious.
Feature Spiritual Parallel
Sameness The ego’s attempt to legislate equality and eliminate conflict by controlling form.
Precision of Language The management of emotions by limiting communication and prohibiting certain words (e.g., using "anxious" instead of "terrified").
Injections/Vaccines A metaphor for the daily suppression and repression of "passionate" or "intense" emotions.
Elsewhere A euphemism for death/elimination used to mask the fear of the unknown.
Proximity Warnings Social distancing used to prevent the "danger" of true intimacy and physical connection.
The Three Prohibitions of the "Way Shower"
Hoffmeister references A Course in Miracles Workbook Lesson 135 to contrast the movie's society with true spiritual presence. To remain in unity, one must avoid three egoic actions:
1. Do not activate the past: The society in the movie avoids the "ruins" of history but remains trapped by its rules.
2. Do not organize the present: The society uses "roles" (mother, father, nurturer) to maintain a "contrived harmony."
3. Do not plan the future: Productivity and the "gross national product" are used to keep individuals small and limited.
4.
The Path of the "Receiver" and the "Giver"
Transitioning Roles
In the film, characters are assigned roles at graduation with the phrase, "Thank you for your childhood."
* Ego Productivity: This represents the world's system of training individuals to be productive members of a "matrix" rather than spiritual beings.
* The Role of the Receiver: The character Jonas is given the rare role of "Receiver of Memories." This symbolizes the spiritual student who must allow repressed memories (both joyful and horrific) to rise into awareness.
* The Function of the Giver: The Giver represents the Holy Spirit or a "Mind Awake." He provides the wisdom of history (the past) to guide the Receiver toward a "holistic perception" of the present.
The Process of Healing and Release
* Feeling the Feelings: One cannot suppress emotions and expect them to vanish. The "elephant" and "war" memories in the film show that darkness must be felt before it can be released.
* Transcending Laws: While Jesus "paid the temple tax" (obeyed form), he taught that we are under no laws but God's. The goal is to use inner guidance to transcend the world's rules through love, rather than through overt rebellion.
* The Song of Prayer: The "echo" or "song" heard by Jonas at the end of the film represents the call to return home to reality, a theme mirrored in the stories of both Jesus and Buddha.
The Metaphysics of Giving and Receiving
The retreat focuses on a radical redefinition of "giving," moving away from concepts of sacrifice and toward a model of abundance.
* Equality of Being and Having: A central insight is the realization that "you are what you are looking for." In this state, the act of giving is identical to the act of receiving.
* Elimination of Scarcity: By engaging in true giving, an individual experiences no loss, lack, or scarcity. Instead, giving is the primary vehicle for achieving true satisfaction and a sense of abundance.
* Satisfaction through Extension: The act of giving is presented as a source of happiness and a means to recognize one’s inherent Love.
Holy Relationships and Transparency
True intimacy is defined not by bodies, but by the "unity of mind."
* The Two Guidelines: Hoffmeister emphasizes two core practices for community and relationship:
1. No People-Pleasing: Breaking the habit of acting out roles to satisfy others' expectations.
2. No Private Thoughts: Total transparency to dissolve the "perceptual jail" of the ego.
* Mighty Companions: Relationships serve as "reflections of healing." When darkness arises in a relationship, the temptation is to project. Instead, "Mighty Companions" help one stay present and release the guilt together.
* The Purpose of the Body: For the Holy Spirit, the body has only one function: Communication. It is a tool to expand perception and demonstrate the "law of love" until the world is forgiven and remembered no more.
-------------------------------------------------
Perfect Love Casts Out Fear
The commentary on the movie The Giver provides a deep exploration of how love serves as the ultimate remedy for fear, directly aligning with the sentiment of "Perfect love casts out fear." The commentary emphasizes the necessity of extending love, light, and joy to others as a natural outcome of spiritual awakening.
The commentary frames the human condition and the society in the movie as being dominated by a "conspiracy" where the ego attempts to substitute fear for divine love.
* Managing Fear through Rules: In The Giver, the society is constructed with rigid rules and "precision of language" to manage and mask the "time of terror" and chaotic emotions found in the unconscious mind. Hoffmeister explains that these societal structures are an attempt to "minimize fear without letting it go," which ultimately fails to provide true peace.
* Transcending through Love: True healing occurs by recognizing the "one law," which is the law of love. Hoffmeister notes that Jesus teaches how to "transcend the whole world through love". When an individual identifies with their true reality as spirit, they realize they are "under no laws but gods," which is the law of love that sustains them and removes the basis for fear.
* The Power of Choice: The climax of the movie is described as a reminder that "love is a power and love is a choice". By choosing love over the ego’s defensive rules, the characters (and the viewers) can move from a state of "double oblivion" and fear back into the light of remembrance.
"Showering" Others with Love
The commentary suggests that once the heart is "activated" by love, it naturally overflows to others, mirroring the idea of "showering" people with love.
* Being a Bringer of Light: Hoffmeister encourages listeners to be "bringers of light" and "happiness" wherever they go. He suggests that true charity is getting in touch with the truth within and then extending that truth to everyone, letting them "feel the peace in your heart when you interact with them".
* Loving Without Conditions: The goal of a "holy relationship" or "true intimacy" described in the commentary is to reach a state where you "want to love everyone... love everything... love without conditions".
* Action Rooted in Heart: The main character, Jonas, demonstrates this by following his heart to save the baby, Gabriel. Hoffmeister explains that when you represent "the goodness" and follow your heart, you are acting as a "miracle worker" whose sole purpose is to represent God’s love in the world.
The Inner journey is from a fear-based, controlled existence to a heart-centered reality where love is the only law and is freely extended to all.
