UNIMA LIBRARY STOCK IN BOOKS
The University of Malawi Library on a Thursday, the 6th May, 2025, smiled at the heavens when it received books from Books for Africa project. It has been a long wait for the institution to have the books, and when the container arrived it was all smiles.
The container carrying the books left Europe in February, but due to other challenges, the container failed to arrive on time. The Books for Africa project has been a long time friend to UNIMA library and this is just one of the good gestures it has shown.
According the Assistant Librarian responsible for Readers Services Mrs. Nancy Mpekansambo, the institution has received copies amounting to 19, 984, and these covers a range of 20 subjects. According to Mpekansambo, the books are to be distributed to other institutions while having some for its students.
The University of Malawi Librarian Mr. Brian Sitima-Ndau, said the coming of the books is a sign that Books for Africa and University of Malawi Library are in good working relationship, and it is a matter of time these two institutions start to work beyond books alone. He further thanked Books for Africa and prayed for continued support and health working relationship between the two institutions.

Civil Society Education Coalition feeds School of Law, Economics and Government.
The Civil Society Education Coalition (CSEC) on Tuesday the 11th of June, 2024 donated 190 books to School of Law, Economics and Government (SLEG) to beef up the book store in the Machika Law Library. The ceremony took place in the Law Boardroom and was graced by the officials from CSEC, the Executive Dean of School of Law, Economics and Government, Heads of the two departments from Law school, office of the University Librarian, staff members and students from the school.
Assistant Librarian, Mrs. Naomi Kachoka, who represented the University Librarian, thanked CSEC for the donation as it will beef up the book stock in the Law library. She said that the books have come at a time when the library is facing hardships to procure books. She assured the donors that the books will be processed in time for the students to use and also make sure that these books are well looked after under the Librarian's office, and also urged the students to be responsible in using the books. She went on to appreciate the CSEC for the donation made, as it has shown it's willingness to help the university in promoting quality education and called upon other organisations to emulate the gesture shown by CSEC to donate more books to the university.
In his remarks, the Executive Dean of School of Law, Economics and Government, Professor Happy Kayuni, thanked the CSEC team for the donation made. He emphasised that the books play a major role to the users and asked for more support from them and also other organisations. He also asked other alumnus societies like CSEC to emulate the gesture of not forgetting the institution they graduated from. He urged other players to donate more books to the school as well as the University since the student intake is increasing each year and the students to book ratio is not matching.
Taking his turn, the Chairperson of CSEC, Dr. Limbani Nsapato, who happens to be the alumnus of UNIMA, said that they gave a slogan of strengthening education through partnership as a way of spicing the event. He said CSEC believe in quality education, and for this to happen there is need to have good partnerships among organisations so as to create a conducive environment for the learners. He encouraged the students to use the books generously and not leave out anyone. He further advised the students to be the major custodians of the books and not people who are vandalised the resources. The Chair said that it is their intention to reach out to more students so as to help imparting the knowledge to the nation. He also asked the students to ensure that they are putting the books to good use.
With the economic hardships faced by students in universities and colleges, text books are proving to be better than electronic ones as electronic require more resources such as bundles of which a lot of students cannot afford to have. In addition, with the intermittent of the internet, it is proving to be so hard for the student community in universities to access soft books or study materials through the internet, and books have proven to be so handy.
Kamuzu University of Health Sciences (KUHeS), Malawi University of Business and Applied Sciences (MUBAS) and other colleges as well as schools are among the beneficiaries of the book donation from CSEC as they will be receiving their books in a few months time. Dr. Nsapato further prayed for continued collaboration between the educational institutions and CSEC so as to see to it that quality education is being promoted.
Before the initial handovers, the Assistant Librarian and the Executive Director of CSEC, Dr. Benedicto Kondowe, signed a Memorandum of Understanding to cement partnership on behalf of the University of Malawi and CSEC. The MOU symbolises the call for continuing partnership between the two institutions.
