Humbleness

Jesus said "Be like these children".

1. Matthew 18:3-4
`And he said: "Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Therefore, whoever takes the lowly position of this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven."`

2. Mark 10:14-15
`When Jesus saw this, he was indignant. He said to them, "Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these. Truly I tell you, anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it."`

3. Luke 18:16-17
`But Jesus called the children to him and said, "Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these. Truly I tell you, anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it."`

What did Jesus mean by "be like children"?

1. Humble - Children don’t brag or try to be "greater". Matthew 18:4

2. Trusting - They depend on their Father completely.

3. Teachable - They’re open to learn and believe.

4. Forgiving - They let go of offenses quickly.

5. Pure in heart - No pride, no malice.

It’s not about being childish. It’s about having 'childlike faith'.

The world tells us to promote ourselves, to be the loudest voice in the room, to build our own brand. But the Lord invites us to something different.

Micah 6:8:
"He hath shewed thee, O man, what is good; and what doth the Lord require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God?"

'Humbleness' - what it is, why the Lord loves it, and how we can practice it?

2. What is Humbleness? -

In the gospel, humbleness isn’t thinking less of yourself. It’s thinking of yourself less.

President Dieter F. Uchtdorf of LDS church taught:
"Humility is not a sign of weakness. It is a sign of spiritual strength."

True humility has three parts:
1. Before God - Recognizing that every good thing comes from Him.
Alma 37:6 "by small and simple things... the Lord can bring about great things."

2. Before Others - Seeing others as children of God, with equal worth. No pride, no comparison.

3. Before Ourselves - Being teachable. Admitting "I don’t know everything. I need the Lord and I need others."

The opposite of humility isn’t confidence. The opposite is pride. And we know from the Book of Mormon that pride was the downfall of both the Nephites and the world today. Even Satan fell from heaven because of pride (Luke 10:18).

3. Why Does the Lord Love the Humble?

D&C 112:10: "Be thou humble; and the Lord thy God shall lead thee by the hand, and give thee answer to thy prayers."

God can’t lead someone who insists on leading themselves.

Think of the Savior. He is the King of Kings, yet He washed feet. He is the Creator, yet He said "I came not to do mine own will, but the will of him that sent me." John 5:30
His entire ministry was power clothed in humility.

When we are humble, we are teachable. And a teachable heart is a heart the Holy Ghost can write upon.

4. Teaching from One of the Twelve -

Elder David A. Bednar of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles.

In his October 2018 General Conference talk "Meek and Lowly of Heart", he taught:

"To be meek is to be strong, not weak; to be spiritual, not passive; to be obedient, not timid. The Savior was meek, yet He was never timid. Meekness is a Christlike
attribute that is developed as we submit our will to the Father and live in accordance with His commandments."

He went on to say that meekness and humility allow us to “endure to the end and overcome the world.”

That’s the promise. Humbleness isn’t about being walked over. It’s about being led by God. It takes more strength to be humble than to be proud.

5. How Do We Practice Humbleness?

Five practical ways:

1. In Prayer -
Start your prayers with gratitude and "Thy will be done." Not just "here’s my list." A humble prayer says "Father, help me see what I’m missing."

2. Scripture reading -
It softens the heart, 'Feast upon the words of Christ ' (2 Nephi 32:3).

3. In Relationships -
Choose to listen more than you speak. Apologize first. Give credit to others.
Alma 37:35 "Counsel with the Lord in all thy doings, and he will direct thee for good."

4. Service - King Benjamin's people served each other after they were humbled, (Mosiah 4:26).
Let's ask ourselves, "How can I serve?" instead of "What do I get?"

5. In Discipleship -
Be quick to repent. Be slow to judge. Be willing to be corrected in lessons, in callings, by the Spirit.
A humble person can say "I was wrong" and "I don’t know, please teach me."

President Nelson of the LDS church has taught that pride closes the door to revelation, but humility opens it.

Closing Testimony

Brothers and sisters, the Lord doesn’t ask us to be perfect. He asks us to be humble.

I testify that as we "walk humbly with thy God," He will walk with us. He will guide us by the hand. He will soften our hearts and the hearts of those around us.

The Savior is the perfect example. Though He had all power, He chose humility. And because of that, He could lift all of us.

I pray we can lay aside pride this day and put on humility, that we might be more like Him.
