Beatrice's innovative AI-powered solution has earned her the right to represent our country🇲🇼 at the Ms. Geek Africa Continental Bootcamp, where she will compete with national winners from across Smart Africa Member States. Her achievement embodies this year's theme: "HerLens AI Solutions - Real Problems. Inclusive Solutions. Scalable Impact."

Take a moment to appreciate the outstanding research undertaken by our Honours students in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Mathematical Sciences degree.

Their projects are a powerful demonstration that mathematics is far more than numbers and equations—it is a tool for solving real-world problems. Through rigorous research, our students have applied mathematical modelling, statistical analysis, optimization, and computational techniques to address challenges across different sectors.

We are incredibly proud to have nurtured this exceptional group of students. Beyond their academic excellence, they have been a closely knit and supportive cohort, demonstrating the true meaning of teamwork, collaboration, and mutual encouragement.

They have led by example, showing that success is achieved not only through individual brilliance but also through working together, learning from one another, and striving for a common goal. In doing so, they have set a remarkably high standard for future generations of our students.

Six of the group have already secured postgraduate places at various institutions across Africa. We wish them well.

Staff Profile : Emmanuel Ngalande, Department of Information and Communication Technology ICT-Mzuni

Emmanuel is an Artificial Intelligence (AI) researcher, ICT educator, and digital transformation strategist with over a decade of experience developing context-aware technology solutions for sustainable development in Africa. He is a Cisco Certified Academy Instructor, a 2026 African AI Policy Fellow with Lawyers Hub, and a PhD candidate in Computer Science at the University of Malawi, where he specializes in the application of Artificial Intelligence in agriculture.

His doctoral research focuses on developing an accessible AI model for detecting maize Fall Armyworm damage, specifically designed for smallholder farmers. By integrating lightweight machine learning, and participatory field testing, his work empowers rural communities to safeguard crops, improve yields, and strengthen regional food security.

For more than ten years, Emmanuel has served as a Lecturer in Information and Communication Technology at Mzuzu University, training students, professionals, and policymakers while bridging academic rigor with real-world application.
