Topic: Understanding How the Brain Encodes and Transmit Information Efficiently Using Behavioral Data

Today, we appreciate and highlight the outstanding research conducted by Daniel Zulu during his Level 4 studies! As an outgoing Level 5 Honours student, Daniel continues to demonstrate exceptional research capacity and innovation in applied mathematics and data science.

His research offers a brilliant, low-cost solution tailored specifically to resource-limited healthcare environments like Malawi, where neuroimaging equipment is scarce. By combining Stroop tests and visual memory assessments with information-theoretic measures, such as Information Transmission Rate (ITR) and Mutual Information, Daniel evaluated neural efficiency across epilepsy, stroke, and control groups. His Machine Learning models achieved up to 89% accuracy using Random Forest classifiers to detect neural efficiency impairments, proving that behavioral data analyzed through mathematical frameworks can serve as a viable alternative to advanced medical technology!

To all aspiring mathematicians and data scientists: math counts, and it builds the future! 🚀

Topic: An Analysis of Commonly Referred Diseases Among Under-Five Children at Mzuzu Central Hospital, Malawi (2020-2024)

Huge congratulations to Rabson Namphungo on successfully defending his Level 4 dissertation today! 👏✨

His research provides a compelling demonstration of how health statistics and categorical data analysis inform pediatric healthcare policy and clinical resource allocation. Rabson evaluated 2,987 referral records of children under five at Mzuzu Central Hospital over a five-year period using descriptive statistics and chi-square independence tests. His findings revealed that respiratory diseases (35.1%) and infectious diseases (29.8%) led referrals—with pneumonia and malaria being the top individual diagnoses (17.7% each)—offering vital, evidence-based insights to strengthen primary healthcare and targeted interventions across Malawi!

Topic: Use of Survival Analysis in Predicting Malaria Patient Time to Recovery in Hospitals (Malawi)

Huge congratulations to Austin Balala on successfully defending his Level 4 dissertation today! 👏✨

His research highlights the crucial role biostatistics and survival analysis play in healthcare management and patient recovery modeling. Austin evaluated retrospective clinical data from 270 laboratory-confirmed malaria patients at Mzuzu Urban Health Centre (2023–2024) using Kaplan-Meier estimation, log-rank tests, and Cox proportional hazards regression in R. Finding a median recovery time of 3 days, his multivariable analysis identified age as a key predictor of recovery speed—providing hospital administrators and clinical staff with data-driven tools to optimize bed management, resource allocation, and treatment planning!

Topic: Determinants of the Duration of Breastfeeding in Malawi: a Survival Analysis Approach

Huge congratulations to Henly Kadzakalowa on successfully defending his Level 4 dissertation today! 👏✨

His research provides a compelling demonstration of how survival analysis and biostatistics inform maternal and child health interventions. Henly analyzed data from 7,483 mother-child pairs using the 2024 Malawi Demographic and Health Survey via Kaplan–Meier survival analysis and the Cox proportional hazards model. Finding a median breastfeeding duration of 23 months, his study revealed that while older maternal age supports longer breastfeeding, higher birth order, household wealth, and urban residence significantly increase early cessation risk—offering health policy experts key target demographics for public health initiatives!

Topic: A Mathematical Model of the Dynamics of Corona virus Within the Host

Huge congratulations to Chikondi Chisanu on successfully defending his Level 4 dissertation today! 👏✨

His research provides a brilliant example of how mathematical biology and differential equations illuminate complex cellular interactions in disease treatment. Chikondi developed a five-compartment ordinary differential equation (ODE) model tracking within-host SARS-CoV-2 dynamics across target cells, infected cells, free virus, innate immune cells, and antibodies. Utilizing the Next-Generation Matrix method to derive R_0 and executing numerical simulations in Python, his stability and sensitivity analyses identified key viral production and clearance drivers—offering crucial quantitative insights to guide target mechanisms for antiviral therapies!

Topic: A Regression-Based Analysis of Groundnuts Yield Resilience Under Rainfall Variability and Extension Service Exposure: Evidence From Thavite, Salima District, Malawi

Huge congratulations to Jaile Kalambalale on successfully defending his Level 4 dissertation today! 👏✨

His research demonstrates how applied statistical modeling directly supports agricultural resilience and rural development. Jaile evaluated data from 151 smallholder farmers in Thavite, Salima District, using a quantitative cross-sectional design and multiple linear regression analysis. His study revealed that access to agricultural extension services and fertilizer significantly increases groundnut yields—with extension exposure actively buffering farmers against rainfall variability. These findings provide strong, data-backed evidence for strengthening climate-smart agricultural policies and extension outreach across Malawi!

Topic: Dynamic System Model for Malaria Transmission Under Rising Temperatures

Huge congratulations to Beauty Kalambalale on successfully defending her Level 4 dissertation today! 👏✨

Her research is an inspiring showcase of how mathematical biology and dynamical systems tackle global health challenges driven by climate change. Beauty constructed a compartmental SEIR-SEI framework incorporating temperature-dependent biological parameters to model interactions between human and mosquito populations. Utilizing the next-generation matrix method to derive the basic reproduction number, her numerical simulations demonstrate how rising temperatures intensify malaria transmission—providing public health officials and epidemiologists with vital predictive tools to design targeted vector control strategies!

Topic: Statistical Model for Determining the Posibility of Airtel Mobile Money Fraude in Mzuzu City, Malawi

Huge congratulations to Afack Robert on successfully defending his Level 4 dissertation today! 👏✨

His research provides a crucial example of how applied statistics and predictive modeling safeguard digital financial inclusion. Afack surveyed Airtel Money users across Mzuzu City to identify key risk factors associated with mobile money fraud using chi-square tests and logistic regression. Achieving a 71.4% classification accuracy, his model highlighted that vulnerability is heavily driven by PIN sharing, weak PIN choices, and engagement with scam messages—offering telecom operators and financial institutions actionable data to implement targeted customer education and real-time fraud monitoring!

Topic: Modeling the Impact of Rainfall Patterns on Clean Water Production at Mudi Dam Using Sarimax Model

Huge congratulations to Maggie Msukwa on successfully defending her Level 4 dissertation today! 👏✨

Her research is a powerful demonstration of how time-series econometrics and exogenous modeling address critical water resource management and urban infrastructure challenges. Maggie analyzed 60 months of data from Blantyre's Mudi Dam (2021–2025) comparing standard SARIMA with a SARIMAX model incorporating non-linear rainfall variables. By demonstrating that SARIMAX achieved superior forecasting performance (MAPE of 32.51%), her findings confirm a key dynamic: moderate rainfall enhances yields while extreme events reduce them. This research equips the Blantyre Water Board with actionable, data-driven insights for proactive, climate-resilient water management!
