After writing their final exams, our Bachelor of Science (Tourism) and Bachelor of Arts (Culture and Heritage Tourism) students stood before a panel and owned their research. From community tourism to digital tech in museums, the findings were 🔥 and publication-worthy.

Prominent Malawian referee and the country's only FIFA-certified Video Assistant Referee (VAR), Enesi Gumbo, is on duty as a Video Match Official at the Morocco 2026 TotalEnergies Women's Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), proudly flying Malawi's flag as the nation's sole match official at the tournament.

A Legend Rests

Bright Mathews Chiyandika (BMC) Nyirenda was born on 21 September 1950. He studied for his first degree at the University of Massachusetts in the United States of America, before reading for his master’s degree at the University of Surrey in the United Kingdom. He was among the first generation of Malawians to study tourism management at both the undergraduate and master’s levels.

He worked for the Department of Tourism in the then Ministry of Tourism, Wildlife and Culture, rising through the ranks until his retirement as the Regional Tourism Officer (North) in 2006. Right after retirement, he led an ambitious project to establish the Faculty of Tourism and Hospitality Management at Mzuzu University, where the first cohort of 40 students was admitted in April 2007. He started as a senior lecturer and faculty coordinator, before becoming the Faculty’s first Dean in 2008.

Poor Bright, or simply BMC, as he was fondly known, dreamt, talked, and breathed tourism. Before the Faculty could even produce its first graduates, he was talking of establishing a Top-of-the-Campus Hotel, where students could go through work integrated learning before proceeding to the industry for their internships. His dream came true in 2015 when the Faculty won a grant from the World Bank for staff training and construction of a Skills Training Centre, aka the MZUNI Dunduzu Campus. BMC retired from Mzuzu University in 2016 at the rank of Associate Professor of Tourism.

Today, as he takes his final journey at Chozoli in Rumphi, we celebrate his remarkable life. We are thankful for the knowledge he imparted to countless students and the moments we shared with him. His legacy lives on.

Death announcement

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the death of Mr BMC Nyirenda, a retired Associate Professor of tourism. He died in the early hours of Tuesday at Mzuzu Central Hospital.

Mr BMC Nyirenda was the founding dean of the Faculty of Tourism, Hospitality and Management. During his service at Mzuzu from 2006 to 2015, he dreamed, talked, conceived and ensured that the Faculty had its own training campus dubbed "Top of the Campus" which we now proudly call home: the Dunduzu Campus.

The remains of Mr BMC Nyirenda will be laid to rest tomorrow, 29th July 2026 at his home village in Chozoli, Rumphi.

It's the first day of the first week of the 8 week school holiday. Holiday yanu mwaiyamba bwanji?

We all know that holidays are meant to refresh you as you prepare for another semester, but again holidays can be used for more meaningful life experiences and lessons. Here are a few tips on what to do during your holidays.

1. Gain some work experience through work placements or volunteering. Some of you have organisations or companies in your vicinity whose activities align with your programme of study. Approach them for possible placements. It doesn't have to bring you money always. You can volunteer as that is good for your CV.

2. Get some employment to earn money, no matter how little it can be. As youths full of energy, explore what the world has to offer. Get some job whether it is piece work, freelance work, or part time job go for it. You can tutor secondary and primary school pupils, trade stuff, paint or sing according to your skills. Behind that job, there are life lessons that would be crucial later on when you have no one to push you.

3. Learn some new skills. It could be in computer programming, research and data analysis, driving, cycling, cooking, dancing, and baking, you name it. Get some new knowledge that could complement and supplement your formal education. Chaphunzilidwa sichinatayidwe.

4. Explore the world funds allowing. Go on a vacation to see the world. You can start small and local. You can busk to fund your trips and volunteer to get more funds for your holiday.

5. Rest to get rid of all the school pressure and toxins encountered during the last semester. It wasn't easy but you survived so replace all those sleepless nights with some sleep and relaxation. Remember some leisure activities cost almost nothing.

Please take care and avoid running into all sorts of problems.

Are you having a bad day because of the exams? Well remember there is no sweet without sweat and there shall be light at the end of the tunnel 🤭🤭.

As a consolation, let's celebrate Joyce Joy Nhlane our BSc Tourism graduate. Joy works for the Coca-cola Company as a Hotels, Restaurants and Cafes (HoReCa) Manager responsible for top hotels and restaurants in Lilongwe, Salima and the rest of the central region. A HoReCa manager is a relationship manager ensuring customer relations, inventory and quality control of the products supplied to these outlets.

Remember, BSc Tourism now rebranded to Bachelor of Business Tourism Management is purely a business management programme. It equips students with the knowledge and skills to design, develop, and market tourism experiences, supported by research and business management principles.

What is tourism? It's anything you do and consume during your free time and that includes food and beverages.

So Joyce sells in a bottle: Coca-cola.
