Learners from Ezulwini Private Schools recently visited Mzimba Prison, where they donated assorted groceries and spent time encouraging inmates as part of the school's community outreach programme.
Head Teacher Kenneth Ndunguru said the visit was inspired by the challenges many inmates face, particularly those without relatives based at the boma. He added that the school believes education goes beyond the classroom by teaching learners the values of compassion, empathy, responsibility, and the importance of supporting those in need.
One of the learners, Troy Itimu, said the visit was a valuable learning experience that taught them the importance of giving back to society and showing kindness to the less privileged and vulnerable. He added that the learners hope to continue participating in similar outreach activities in the future.
Mzimba Prison Public Relations Officer Kennedy Kamenya commended the school for the initiative, saying such acts of generosity complement government efforts to improve the welfare of inmates.
Speaking on behalf of the inmates, Blessings Ndhlanga thanked the learners for their support and appealed to organisations, institutions, and well-wishers to emulate the gesture, noting that many inmates continue to face numerous challenges.
