The Bunda Economics Association (BEA), in collaboration with the Cunima Economics Association, successfully hosted an insightful public lecture at LUANAR Bunda Campus on 18th April 2026, featuring the National Planning Commission (NPC).

The session was led by Mr. Frank Kamanga, Research Officer at the National Planning Commission, who delivered an engaging presentation on Malawi 2063 (MW2063) and the National Research Agenda (NRA).

During the lecture, Mr. Kamanga emphasized the importance of youth participation in national development by encouraging students to align their academic research, projects, and theses with Malawiโ€™s long-term development priorities. He further highlighted the role of the National Planning Commission in ensuring that citizens, particularly young people, are informed, empowered, and actively involved in shaping the countryโ€™s future.

The event was highly interactive, with students actively participating through thoughtful questions, reflections, and discussionsโ€”showcasing their keen interest in understanding Malawiโ€™s development agenda and their role in achieving it.

On 9th April 2026, members of the Bunda Economics Association attended the ๐Ÿ๐Ÿ”๐ญ๐ก ๐„๐ฆ๐ข๐ง๐ž๐ง๐ญ ๐’๐ฉ๐ž๐š๐ค๐ž๐ซ ๐’๐ž๐ซ๐ข๐ž๐ฌ (๐„๐’๐’) held at the Bingu International Convention Centre. The event was organized by Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources, Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa, Mwapata Institute, and the Government of Norway.

The series focused on strategies for improving productivity in Malawiโ€™s agricultural sector and unlocking its economic potential.
The session began with a presentation by Mr. Jonathan from Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa, who emphasized the untapped potential of soybean and groundnut production in Malawi. According to his presentation, these two crops alone have the potential to generate approximately ๐”๐’๐ƒ ๐Ÿ”๐ŸŽ๐ŸŽ ๐ฆ๐ข๐ฅ๐ฅ๐ข๐จ๐ง for the country.

He urged key players in the agricultural sector to work collectively toward transformative progress rather than incremental change, stressing that Malawiโ€™s biggest agricultural challenge is not necessarily a lack of knowledge, but rather limited collaboration among stakeholders. He further highlighted the growing global demand for soybean and groundnuts, noting their potential to boost Malawiโ€™s foreign exchange earnings.

The second part of the session was a panel discussion moderated by Mr. Rex, which brought together five key stakeholders in the agricultural sector. The panelists shared insights on the initiatives they are currently implementing and acknowledged that stronger collaboration remains essential for driving sector-wide productivity.
Audience participation added depth to the discussion, with attendees raising critical concerns and sharing innovative ideas.

Some participants highlighted how well-established agricultural industries, such as to***co, provide financing support to farmers, while soybean and groundnut value chains lack similar structured support systems. Others presented innovations such as aflatoxin management solutions developed using microbes, demonstrating the role of research and innovation in addressing sector challenges.

The discussion concluded with panelists reaffirming their commitment to improving agricultural productivity in Malawi and outlining practical interventions they are pursuing to strengthen the sector.

The 16th Eminent Speaker Series provided valuable insights into the challenges and opportunities within Malawiโ€™s agricultural sector, while also emphasizing the need to maximize the countryโ€™s estimated USD 1.6 billion in foreign investment to accelerate agricultural transformation.

The Bunda Economics Association Research Team recently held a highly engaging and impactful training session aimed at strengthening membersโ€™ professional readiness and practical skill sets in Agricultural Economics.

The training focused on what it truly means to stand out as a graduate, emphasizing the importance of problem-solving, data analysis, and effective communication. Members were encouraged to look beyond academic knowledge and reflect on the skills they need to develop in order to remain competitive in todayโ€™s job market.

Key highlights included practical guidance on crafting strong, results-oriented CVs, tailoring applications for different sectors, and preparing for various types of interviews. BUNDA ECONOMICS ASSOCIATION โ€“ RESEARCH TEAM GENERAL ASSEMBLY

On 25 March 2026, the Bunda Economics Association (BEA) Research Team successfully held its first General Assembly of the second semester a vibrant and engaging session that marked a strong start to the academic term.

The assembly aimed to orient new members on the purpose, structure, and activities of the Research Team, while fostering a shared vision of research excellence and academic growth.

The session opened with welcoming remarks from the Programme Coordinator, Precious Ndhlobera Longwe, who warmly received new members and highlighted the value of being part of the Research Team. He emphasized key opportunities such as capacity-building initiatives, including data analysis training, designed to equip members with practical and competitive research skills.

To promote transparency and leadership awareness, members of the Executive Committee reintroduced themselves and outlined their roles, offering clarity to members and guidance to aspiring candidates ahead of the upcoming elections.

The Bunda Economics Association held its General Assembly on Saturday, 14th March, bringing members together for a productive and engaging session.

The meeting opened with remarks from BEA President Lekani Juwa , who emphasized active participation, learning beyond the classroom, and the importance of attending the upcoming public lectures for the semester.

Reports were presented by the Treasurer William Gama , Debate, Research Deborah Magaleta , and Publications teams Mikeer Manyozo . The Debate Team highlighted upcoming debate trainings, while the Research Team shared that they successfully conducted interviews and now have new members on the team. They also highlighted ongoing data analysis learning and emphasized teaching content relevant to membersโ€™ years of study, as well as developing topics for the Debate Team and the โ€œEconomist Explainsโ€ segment.
The Publications Team shared their ongoing work and commitment to producing quality content.
A strong and focused start to the semester ahead.
