Government Reaffirms Commitment to Safe Learning Spaces for Girls

Minister of Education, Science and Technology, Hon. Bright Msaka, SC, has reaffirmed the government's commitment to improving access to safe learning environments for girls, saying the construction of a girls' hostel at Linthipe Secondary School in Dedza will help address accommodation challenges that hinder many learners from attaining quality education.

Speaking during the visit, Msaka said government initiated the hostel construction programme to address challenges faced by learners, particularly girls who travel long distances to school or rent accommodation near schools, exposing them to various risks.

He said the hostels are being constructed to provide a safe and conducive learning environment for learners, enabling them to focus on their studies without worrying about accommodation and security concerns.

The Minister noted that the Linthipe Secondary School girls’ hostel project is currently about 80 percent complete and forms part of a wider government initiative to improve access to education for girls across the country.

Msaka emphasized that government remains committed to completing the project and ensuring that the facility is handed over for use as soon as possible.

The government is constructing similar hostels in different schools nationwide as part of efforts to promote equitable access to quality education and create safer learning environments for all learners.

Deputy Minister Emphasizes Integrity and Quality as PSLCE Examinations Begin

The Deputy Minister of Education Francis Foley has reaffirmed the importance of safeguarding the integrity and quality of education in Malawi as candidates across the country begin sitting for the Primary School Leaving Certificate of Education (PSLCE) examinations.

The Deputy Minister said this during a monitoring exercise of the commencement of the examinations in Mchinji district, among other things he said government remains committed to maintaining high standards and accountability in education, stressing that the successful administration of examinations is critical to ensuring credibility and public confidence in the system.

He further said government's dedication to quality education reflects its broader vision of creating opportunities for all learners and ensuring that no child is left behind. He added that maintaining examination standards is one way of guaranteeing fairness and promoting excellence in education.

He therefore called upon all stakeholders involved in the administration of the examinations to uphold professionalism and adhere to established procedures to ensure the smooth conduct of the PSLCE examinations.

The PSLCE examinations has commenced in centres across the country on 8th June 2026. The Deputy Minister visited Kawere Primary School,Mchinji Mission Primary School and Chinyata Primary School.

Standard 8 Examinations Start Smoothly, Says Education Minister

Minister of Education, Science and Technology, Honourable Bright Msaka SC, has said the 2026 Primary School Leaving Certificate of Education (PSLCE) examinations have commenced smoothly across the country, with no major challenges reported during the opening days of the exercise.

Speaking after conducting a monitoring exercise at selected examination centres in Dedza District, Msaka said the examinations had started well , he expressed satisfaction with the level of preparedness demonstrated by schools, invigilators and education officials involved in administering the examinations.

He noted that the smooth commencement of the examinations reflects the commitment and coordination among stakeholders in the education sector.

He further encouraged candidates to remain focused, adhere to examination regulations and do their best as they seek to progress to the next level of their education.

He said the Ministry of Education will continue monitoring examination centres throughout the examination period to ensure that the process remains credible, fair and free from malpractice.

The minister conducted the exercise at Kanama Primary School and Nthandiza Primary School in the district.

Msaka, Zambian Envoy Discuss Deepening Education Ties

The High Commissioner of the Republic of Zambia to Malawi, Lieutenant Colonel (Retired) Panji Kaunda, on Tuesday paid a courtesy visit to the Minister of Education, Science and Technology, Honourable Bright Msaka, where the two leaders discussed areas of deepening education sector cooperation between the two neighbouring sister countries.

During the meeting, the two leaders explored opportunities for strengthening collaboration and sharing experiences to improve education delivery and outcomes in both nations.

Honourable Msaka emphasized that closer collaboration among academic institutions in Malawi and Zambia is crucial for advancing the education sector in the two sister countries.

He noted that partnerships in research, knowledge exchange, and capacity building can help drive innovation and improve the quality of education.

Lieutenant Colonel Kaunda highlighted the strong historical and cultural ties between Malawi and Zambia and the importance of continued engagement to translate shared ideas into tangible benefits for learners and educators in the two former British colonies.

He said continued cooperation between the two countries would help strengthen education systems and create opportunities for mutual learning and development.

The meeting reaffirmed the commitment of both countries to deepen education cooperation through the exchange of best practices.

Deputy Minister Satisfied with Start of JCE Examinations.

Deputy Minister of Education, Science and Technology, Honourable Francis Folley MP, has expressed satisfaction with the smooth commencement of the 2026 Junior Certificate of Education (JCE) examinations following visits to examination centres in Salima and Dowa districts.

Foley toured Msalura Community Day Secondary School (CDSS) and Salima Secondary School in Salima, as well as Mvera CDSS and Chankhungu CDSS in Dowa, to appreciate how the examinations had started and assess the overall examination environment.

Speaking during the tour, the Deputy Minister said he was impressed with the level of preparedness demonstrated by school authorities, invigilators and examination officials. He noted that the examinations had commenced in a calm and orderly manner, with candidates reporting on time and centres adhering to examination regulations.

Foley commended teachers and examination personnel for their commitment to ensuring the credibility and smooth administration of the examinations, describing their efforts as critical to maintaining public confidence in the country's education system.

Education Division Manager (EDM) for Central East division said all examination centres under his jurisdiction were adequately prepared for the exercise, adding that supervisors, invigilators and candidates had been oriented on examination procedures to ensure a smooth process throughout the examination period.

Headteacher for Chankhungu Community Day Secondary School, Steven Masakatira said the examinations had started without major challenges. He attributed the smooth process to adequate preparations by the school and cooperation among candidates, teachers and examination officials.

Apart from monitoring the JCE examinations, Foley also visited schools implementing the Improving Secondary Education in Malawi (ISEM) Projects , During the visit he appreciated the progress being made through the initiatives, which are aimed at improving the quality of education, strengthening school management systems and promoting equitable access to learning opportunities.

He noted that such interventions are playing a crucial role in supporting government efforts to enhance teaching and learning outcomes in schools across the country.

Msaka Hails 2026 JCE Examinations as Most Organised Yet

Minister of Education, Science and Technology, Bright Msaka SC, has described the 2026 Junior Certificate of Education (JCE) examinations as the most organised examinations the country has ever experienced, citing the smooth administration of the tests across the country.

Msaka made the remarks during a visit to Lilongwe Girls Secondary School, where he monitored the progress of the examinations and interacted with education officials.

The minister said the examinations had so far proceeded without any major challenges, noting that no issues had been reported since the commencement of the exercise. He said approximately 161,000 candidates are sitting for the examinations at various centres nationwide.

He added that the examinations provide an important opportunity to assess the knowledge and skills learners have acquired, as well as the quality of teaching being offered in schools across the country. According to Msaka, the results will help determine the progress being made in Malawi's education sector.

Msaka further expressed optimism that this year's candidates will perform better than last year's cohort, which recorded a 77 percent pass rate. He said improved results would be a clear indication that the country's education system is making positive strides.

The minister also highlighted the impact of the government's free secondary education policy, saying that examination fees for most candidates sitting for the JCE examinations were paid by the government. He described this as an important milestone in the implementation of free secondary education in Malawi.

Headteacher for Lilongwe Girls Secondary School, Loyce Kumtamula, said the school was well prepared for the examinations and that candidates were writing their papers in a conducive environment. She expressed confidence that the learners would perform well, attributing this to the school's commitment to quality teaching and adequate preparation throughout the academic year.

Let's Build Foundation Hands Over Education Infrastructure in Dowa

Minister of Education, Science and Technology, Bright Msaka, SC has commended Let’s Build Foundation-Malawi for constructing and handing over 13 twin classroom blocks and 14 latrine blocks to seven Community Day Secondary Schools in Dowa District.

Speaking during the handover ceremony on Saturday at Simbi Community Day Secondary School in Dowa, Msaka said the facilities will help ease classroom congestion, improve sanitation and support the successful implementation of the Free Secondary Education policy by creating a better learning environment for learners.

He described the investment as a strong example of how partnerships between Government and development partners can help address education infrastructure challenges and improve access to quality education.

The Minister also urged communities and school authorities to protect and maintain the facilities, while reaffirming Government's commitment to expanding access to quality and inclusive education across Malawi.

Let's Build Foundation country representative, Ruth Kamwendo disclosed that the classrooms have been built across seven schools in Dowa: Nalunga, Kawangwi, Chimwetsero, Chakhadza, Simbi, Mdika, and Tchale with each classroom equipped with initial electrical tubing and fittings, as well as 50 desks.

She added that the facilities include accommodations for disabled learners, standard students, and changing rooms.

The initiative began in Lilongwe in 2022, with the total project value reported at 2.5 billion Malawi Kwacha, benefiting over 400 students.

The Campaign seeks to promote hygiene, environmental cleanliness and collective responsibility among learners and communities in schools nationwide.

E-Learning and Technology Improve Attendance and Classroom Engagement

Minister of Education, Science and Technology, Bright Msaka, says the integration of technology in classrooms is already producing visible results, particularly in improving school attendance and helping learners grasp concepts faster.

Msaka made the remarks during a tour of Mkwichi Primary School, one of the schools where learners are using e-learning through digital tools.

He said introducing technology during the early years of education is critical because it helps build a strong foundation for children’s future success, adding that the Ministry is ensuring learners are exposed to technology early enough.

The minister said government has already witnessed transformational outcomes in schools due to the technological advancements being introduced. He added that the technology is also being used as a motivation tool to encourage learners to remain in school.

Msaka further expressed confidence that the progress being witnessed at Mkwichi Primary School will be replicated across the country if schools .

Headteacher for Mkwichi Primary School, Esnart Moya, said the introduction of learning technology has positively transformed lessons in innovative ways and is helping learners improve creativity, collaboration and confidence in learning.
