Political update
Political parties contesting in September 16, 2025 tripartite elections have signed a peace declaration pledging to uphold unity before, during, and after polling.
The signing followed a training organized by the Malawi Peace and Unity Commission (MPUC) from August 24–29 at Crossroads Hotel, Blantyre, which brought together District Peace and Unity Committees (DPUC) and Multiparty Liaison Committees (MPLC).
MPUC Commissioner Sheikh Ali Makalani reminded parties to accept results peacefully, saying only one winner can emerge in an election. On his part, Senior Chief Kapeni described the training as an eye opener and urged leaders to guard against violence and division.
The declaration commits parties to campaign peacefully, avoid hate speech and fake news, respect the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC), and resolve disputes through dialogue or legal channels.
Stakeholders expressed optimism that the pact will help Blantyre set the tone for peaceful elections nationwide.
