DEFINITIONS OF A WORD
a. Potential pause
Lyons (1968) states that it has been suggested that the word should be defined as any segment of a sentence bounded by successive points at which pausing is possible.
b. Semantic criterion
The semantic definition of the term word is as follows: A word may be defined as the union of a particular grammatical employment (Lyons, 1968, p.200)
C. Minimum Free Form
Leonard Bloomfield, an American linguist, defined a word as a minimum free form ( Palmer, 1971, p .47) . This means that a word is a smallest bit of speech that can occur in isolation.
