Loudon school for the deaf

He influenced the church to have the deaf school started in the synod, particularly in Louden presbytery. It started with nineteen pupils of different ages form 5 till 10 years old. The lessons started in borrowed rooms in Embangweni. Then the Marion Medical Mission came to support the school with structures. Since then, the school had been growing. In 1996 the school was officially opened by the minister of education. After the official opening the constructing of the deaf school continued. Now it consist of a boys hostel, a girls hostel, different classrooms for all classes, a chapel and teachers houses. The school is a boarding school, which means that all children live at the school area. In holiday time the pupils visit their homes. The learners are in age of 5 till 25 years, and they do not pay school fees. The school depends on donors, well-wishes and the government. Nowadays the school has got three sections: pre-school, primary section and vocational training section. It uses bilingual approach, which means that you speak and sign at the same time. We use international one hand alphabet. The mission statement of our school is: educating a deaf child for a positive future. Nowadays there are three pre-school classes, nine primary classes and a carpenter and tailoring class. The school includes 186 learners. There are house mother who look after them. The pupils come from the Northern region and a part of the central region of Malawi. The team of the school consists of 14 teachers, including the Head Master, Mr. Macleod Hara. Every class has his own teacher. On general basis the pupil-teacher ratio should be 1 teacher to 10 learners. Because of the nowadays situation the ratio is more. We try to create an stimulating and encouraging atmosphere for all learners.
