In a bid to enhance the relevance and quality of one of its flagship degree programmes, the Bachelor of Banking and Financial Services Management (BBFSM), the Malawi College of Accountancy recently held a comprehensive stakeholder consultation aimed at validating and updating the BBFSM curriculum to align with current industry trends and meet the requirements of the national accreditation body.

Speaking during the event on Friday, Blantyre Campus Director, Dr. George Kaudza Masina, emphasized the importance of the initiative.

“Our objective is to produce industry-ready graduates, and by engaging both industry and academia, we are assured that our curriculum remains relevant and responsive to the ever-evolving banking landscape,” he said.

During the session, industry and academic experts drawn from institutions such as NBS Bank, Malawi Confederation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry, Reunion Insurance, National Bank of Malawi, Rhino Insurance Brokers, and Blantyre International University expressed satisfaction with the curriculum review process.

The initiative underscores MCA’s commitment to producing competent and industry-ready professionals capable of contributing meaningfully to the socio-economic development of the nation.

The event also involved members of the MCA BBFSM alumni community.

A new chapter has officially begun for our first-year students across the Blantyre, Lilongwe, and Mzuzu campuses. From exciting introductions to insightful sessions on academic programmes, student life, and campus culture, Orientation Week set the tone for a successful semester ahead.

Speaking during one of the sessions, MCA Head of Programmes for Blantyre Campus, Esnart Lengani encouraged students to stay focused, work hard, and make the most of the opportunity to pursue higher education at MCA.

“You must work hard to achieve your goals, it is disheartening for parents and guardians to see students fail after investing in their education,” she said.

Students were also urged to read and understand the Student Handbook to help them uphold the standards and values that guide student conduct throughout their academic journey.

The Malawi College of Accountancy has officially welcomed its new Principal, Mr. Frank Kabudula.

Mr. Kabudula takes over from Mrs. Christina Chithila, who concluded her duties at MCA on April 24.

Speaking during the introduction ceremony held on Wednesday, the College Registrar, Mr. Yotamu Machila, urged staff members to extend to the new Principal the same support and cooperation they accorded his predecessor to ensure the continued growth and progress of the institution.

In his remarks, Mr. Kabudula expressed gratitude for the warm welcome and said he looks forward to working collaboratively with staff members for the advancement of the College.

Minister of Education, Science and Technology, Bright Msaka, SC, has pledged government support to the Malawi College of Accountancy (MCA) as it works to promote quality higher education.

The Minister made the pledge on Thursday in Lilongwe during a courtesy meeting with representatives from the college.

Msaka noted that MCA’s hybrid status as government-owned but commercially operated has created funding and operational ambiguities.

Acknowledging the institution as part of government, the Minister urged the college to openly share its challenges so that the ministry can help address them.

MCA Registrar, Yotam Machila, highlighted several issues stemming from limited financial resources, including slow infrastructure development (such as hostels and classrooms) and insufficient student loans.

He called on the ministry to help tackle infrastructure challenges through the Public Sector Investment Programme (PSIP), to include MCA in broader higher education activities, and to provide needy students with full loans, just as other public universities do.

𝐒𝐭𝐮𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐒𝐩𝐨𝐭𝐥𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐖𝐞𝐝𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐝𝐚𝐲: 𝐁𝐚𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐌𝐢𝐤𝐞 𝐌𝐰𝐚𝐬𝐞 🎓
Today, we shine the spotlight on one of the students at the esteemed Malawi College of Accountancy (MCA), Bahat Mike Mwase, a second-year student pursuing a Bachelor of Applied Accounting, Auditing, and Information Systems (BAAAIS), who also serves as Social Welfare Director for the Student Union.

📘Sharing his academic journey, Bahat says he began his secondary school education at St. John Bosco and later completed it at Exam Masters Secondary School, where he developed a strong passion for pursuing accounting at the tertiary level.

“I started admiring the programme even before the MSCE examination results were released, and through determination and passion, I was later enrolled at the Malawi College of Accountancy,” says Bahat, who also serves as the General Secretary for the BAAAIS Programme Society.

He explains that he enjoys the BAAAIS programme because it goes beyond traditional accounting and covers the entire business environment, including information systems. It equips students with both financial and practical business skills, meaning one is not limited to employment but can also become self-reliant and entrepreneurial, making it highly relevant in today’s world.

He further notes that courses such as Business Information Systems and Information Technology Systems have shown him how accounting is evolving in a digital and modern business environment. He adds that this integration aligns well with the vision of Malawi 2063, which focuses on modernization and innovation. These courses, he says, have helped him appreciate how technology enhances efficiency and decision-making in organisations.

Reflecting on his experience at MCA, Bahat shares:
“My experience at MCA, both as a student and a student leader, has been positive and impactful. MCA provides a strong academic foundation, especially in the first year, which helps students clearly understand their field of study. I have also found the student community to be engaging and supportive, making it easier to connect, collaborate, and grow both academically and socially.”

Bahat adds that campus life at MCA is active and offers numerous opportunities for involvement and leadership. He notes that staff are approachable and interactive, and with continued flexibility and engagement, students can benefit even more academically.

💬His message to aspiring students:
“I would like to encourage all students aspiring to join MCA not to hesitate, but to make the right choice today and pursue their goals with confidence.”

Bahat concludes by sharing his vision as Social Welfare Director for the upcoming semester: to enhance student wellness. He notes that many students today struggle academically due to mental health challenges, which can be addressed through welfare-centered activities and initiatives.
