Four Malawian learners have qualified for the continental finals of the Malawi Rising Star mathematics competition following a week-long camp that brought together top students from selected schools.
The finals will be held in Ivory Coast in June this year.
The four are Praise Maganga and Veria Banda from Bedir International Secondary School in Lilongwe, and Kezia Mtonga and Jordan Bushiri from Blantyre Secondary School. They emerged as the top performers among 33 participants.
The competition, held at Ubuntu Nations School in Dowa, was organised by Africa Olympiad Academy in partnership with QED Africa Foundation.
Although six slots were initially allocated for Malawi, only four learners met the required standard.
Maganga, who was the standout performer, has been awarded a three-year scholarship to study at the Africa Olympiad Academy in Kigali, Rwanda.
Africa Olympiad Academy Executive Director Arun Shanmuganathan said the initiative aims to nurture problem-solving skills critical for innovation and national development.
βThe concept is about solving difficult and challenging problems because thatβs how innovations are made. For Malawi to grow, we need top mathematicians who can create solutions to complex challenges,β he said.
He added that the academy plans to have Malawi represented at global Olympiad competitions next year, noting that this yearβs global event will be held in China.
