The primary concern, in my view, revolves around the devaluation-induced decline in disposable income. While the RBM stance on opposing salary increments is logical, it lacks depth in proposing alternatives to address the issue of diminishing disposable income.

I would advocate for a reduction in taxes as a viable solution. If the RBM and the government, intend to make a meaningful impact on the well-being of an average economic agent, a reduction in taxes becomes a crucial consideration. This strategy holds merit as it would bolster disposable income for individuals and simultaneously mitigate inflationary pressures. Essentially, this aligns with the basic principle of tax buoyancy, where the government adjusts its tax collection based on the economic conditions. During periods of economic strain, such as the current scenario, a reduction in taxes could serve as a counteractive measure.

However, the critical question arises: Are the government and RBM willing to implement such austerity measures? Would they be open to collecting fewer taxes from the challenged citizens of Malawi? This raises a fundamental inquiry into whether their policies genuinely reflect a desire for the well-being of the Malawian population.
