The movie Blueback offers more than a moving cinematic experience. It invites us to reflect on a question deeply relevant to the Maldives: how do we pursue development without losing the natural systems that sustain us?
Over the past two decades, our islands have undergone rapid change. Land reclamation, clearing of vegetation, and the modification of mangroves and reefs have supported growing social and economic needs. Yet, these changes also highlight the environmental cost when ecological balance is not fully safeguarded.
For small island nations like ours, this reflection is critical. Trees provide shade and cooling, mangroves reduce flooding and support livelihoods, and coral reefs protect our shores while sustaining marine ecosystems. These are not just elements of our environment, rather the very foundation of island life.
The Blue Black film screening organized in collaboration with and made possible with the support of , created much needed space for us to pause and reflect together.
It reminded us that development and environmental stewardship are not opposing forces, but interconnected responsibilities. As we shape the future of our islands, it urged us to think about resilience, responsibility, and the legacy we leave behind.
Sometimes, the most powerful stories are the ones that bring us back to our own home.
