I am Yumna and I am a Civil Engineer. After completion of high school, I was interested in a field that majors in physics & math. I was drawn to civil engineering during the research process.

Civil engineering is a hectic field and often times, women have to prove by undertaking & volunteering tasks to fight stereotypes that women can be less fit for the deemed tasks.

My advice to young girls is to research before pursuing any field, understand your own passion in life and remember, there is no job that a girl “cannot” do.

I am Aishath Bariyya and I work as a Senior Engineer in Water Solutions. Sinamale’ Bridge is one of the major projects I have worked on. I developed an interest in the field during an opportunity to travel across Maldives and saw the need for infrastructure development.

People generally believed these are mostly men’s jobs and hence most girls did not get encouraged towards such professions. However, I believe things have improved since then and I keep seeing more and more female Engineers in Maldives.

Don’t choose a profession just because somebody said that you should work in a certain field. Explore the available options and remember that there is no gender when it comes to being in a profession. If you love what you do, no challenge would be too difficult to overcome.
