The raw side of autism.

To most people, it's "just a haircut."
For our family, it's weeks of planning, making calls, finding enough people to help, preparing Zaan mentally, and hoping the day goes as smoothly as possible.

His sensory needs don't make this a simple task. It becomes physically exhausting, emotionally draining, and mentally overwhelming for everyone involved.

Sometimes school asks us to cut his hair. We know it's long. We see it too. But what looks like a 20-minute haircut for most families can take an entire team for ours. Sometimes we even have to postpone because we can't gather enough people to help safely.

This photo wasn't taken today. It was about five or six months ago. Now it's time to do it all over again.

We've tried everything we could think of. We let him cut my hair and his sister's hair so he'd become familiar with scissors. We gave him a trimmer to explore. We tried taking it slowly. We even tried cutting his hair while he was sleeping. But his sensory challenges are so intense that he wakes up immediately.

And on top of everything else, having someone come from the salon to cut his hair at home is expensive.

This is one of those invisible parts of autism that people rarely see. Behind every "simple" task is a family doing everything they can.

And don't even get me started on cutting his nails. That's another story for another day.
