MIC School of Agriculture: Empowering Maldives through Agriculture 🌱

Photos from MIC School of Agriculture's post 25/03/2026

Todays activity with the kids was all about soil mixing and seed germination.
we started by preparing a healthy soil mix using vermi compost. while mixing we discovered some earthworms. At first, the kids were a bit scared, but after learning how helpful earthworms are for the soil and how they are actually our little garden friends, they slowly gained the confidence to hold them, observe them, and even play with them.
next we prepared the posts by making small holes at the bottom for drainage, then filled them with the soil mix, After that, we planted watermelon seeds and gently watered them.
it was a bit tiring for the kids, but they truly enjoyed every moment of the activity. most importantly, they gained hands on knowledge about plants, gardening, and the importance of nature.

A fun and meaningful learning experience for everyone.

Alhamdhulillah. Today we harvested our first red gram (pigeon pea) pods in the Maldives!
We sowed the seeds in August 2025 for germination. it took time to adapt to our island clomate. but once established, the plant showed very lush and vigourous growth.
The plant grow as strong bush reaching nearly 6 feet in height. part of the credit belongs to our Vermicompost providing exceptional nutrients and nourishment to the plant.
It has many branches, making it very productive.
The leaves are trifoliate. (Three leaflets per leaf), Oval to lance shaped.
The small bright yellow flowers are exceptionally beautifull and started flowering about 20 days ago (february 2026.)
Today we harvested the first few pods. - and many more are coming soon.
This crop has great potential for Maldivian farmers because; it tollerates heat.
it improves soil vertility( Notrogen fixing legume)
it can be eaten fresh or dried.
it is highly nutritious.

Hands on Learning in the Garden.
Yesterday, our students actively participated in seed bed preparation and planting activities as part of their practical gardening sessions.

We prepared the seed bed by thorough w**ding, loosening the soil, and removing coral pebbles and unwanted materials. After smoothing the soil, amaranthus seeds were mixed with coco peat and vermicompost and carefully broadcasted for uniform germination, followed by gentle watering.

In addition, watermelon and cucumber seeds were planted in the allotted areas, giving students valuable hands-on experience in crop establishment and field practices.

Learning by doing is the best way to understand sustainable gardening 🌿
Proud of our students’ enthusiasm and teamwork!

Rosella /
We are happily growing Rosella ( also known as Fermented spinach/ Hibiscus in Maldives) in many parts of India, it is called as and is very famous for its unique taste.
In Indian , the leaves are widely used to prepare chutneys, pickles and flavourful curries with chicken, mutton, and other dishes, giving a rich and distinct taste.
the pods are used for the tea and jams for its unique sweet and sour taste.

In Maldives, Rosella is popularly used to make tea and it truly stands out from other teas. The tea has a unique beautiful deep red colour, a thick consistency , and a refreshing taste - sour at first, followed by a mild natural sweetness.

Our respected Principal, Ms. Aminath Ali Saleem (Aminath Mufeed) Likes the Rosella Tea very much and appreciated its flavour. She encouraged us to gro more rosella plants to meet the growing demand. Taking her motivation seriously, we are now planning to produce more plants and expand cultivation so everyone who wishes to taste this wonderful tea can enjoy it.

Health benefits of Rosella:
Rich in , Supporting healthy blood and energy levels
High in antioxidants that helps protect the body from damage,
contains flavonoids that supports heart health
Helps in Boosting immunity,
Supports digestion and over all wellness,
Naturally refreshing and hydrating.
we are proud to grow a plant that is not only delicious but also beneficial for health.
more rosella plants are on the way - stay connected with us to experience its taste and its benefits

Sustainable Agriculture Waste Recycling- plant waste from the cucumber is reused to enrich dragon fruit, banana and other crops.

Organic Nutrition for grapes- the use of fish meal has resulted in strong growth and healthier grape production.

Our two students Joined us on this visit, gaining valuable hands on exposure to innovative farming techniques and practical knowledge.

Today we collected Dry leaves that fallen from the pine tree along our school road.

we gathered 5 full bags of dry leaves wich we later used as mulch on top of our garden beds. mulching is a simple but powerful practice:

Which supresses w**d growth,
Helps conserve soil moisture
Gradually decomposes into organic matter
adds nutrients to the soil,
prorects young plants and improves soil health

A small action, but a big step towords sustainable gardening and environmental care proud of our teams effort today
