Today we remember and celebrate the birthday of a true Bee original: Dr. George Wills, the very first Pronouncer at the inaugural Bee in 1925. 🐝
Born almost exactly one year after the Civil War ended, Dr. Wills lived through remarkable chapters of American history, and helped start one of the Bee’s most beloved traditions by stepping up to pronounce the words for the first-ever competitors. A lifelong educator, he spent decades shaping young minds, serving as a longtime head of the Department of English at Western Maryland College (now McDaniel College).
For more than a century, every word pronounced traces back to pioneers like Dr. Wills. On his heavenly birthday, we’re grateful for the voice that helped start it all. 💛
