Following the launch of M-STAR, we brought together key economic leaders at the Université des Mascareignes, Rose Hill Campus for our second workshop: "Mapping Private-Sector Climate Risk in Mauritius."

Extreme weather doesn't just hit infrastructure, it threatens trade, supply chains, physical assets, and financial stability across the island. This session focused on helping businesses move away from post-disaster recovery toward data-driven risk management. Using M-STAR’s spatial modeling, decision-makers explored how to forecast financial impacts across real estate, transportation, and commerce networks.

Strategic Private-Sector Leadership
The M-STAR project is funded by the FCDO and implemented jointly by the University of Oxford and UdM with the support of the British High Commission. A major highlight of the day was our close collaboration with Business Mauritius and the Mauritius Bankers Association (MBA). By bringing together leaders representing major commercial enterprises and key financial institutions, we opened a vital dialogue on stress-testing asset portfolios, refining risk pricing, and ensuring business continuity during severe climate events.

Sector Deep-Dives & Interactive Sessions
The afternoon focused on translating risk assessments into concrete frameworks across four core pillars:
• Finance & Banking: Aligning climate risks with portfolio management and green lending
• Insurance: Developing precise risk-modeling tools for physical assets
• Industry & Logistics: Safeguarding supply routes, manufacturing sites, and port operations
• Commerce: Maintaining operational resilience during flash floods and cyclones

Distinguished Experts:
• Kevin Ramkaloan — CEO, Business Mauritius
• Daniel Essoo — CEO, Mauritius Bankers Association
• Prof. Jim W. Hall — University of Oxford
• Sophie Lawrence — UK Taskforce on Access to Climate Finance (FCDO)

Building a resilient economy takes more than public policy, it requires active integration from the local business community. M-STAR gives our private sector the data needed to make smart, forward-looking investments for Mauritius.
Thank you to all speakers, financial leaders, and participants for taking part in this essential step forward!

Building a climate-resilient future for Mauritius 🌍⚡️

Flash floods, rising seas, and severe cyclones pose constant threats to vital infrastructure. To stay ahead, Mauritius has successfully launched M-STAR (Mauritius Strategic Tool for the Assessment of Risk), a pioneer geospatial platform designed to map climate vulnerabilities and drive smart, data-driven investments across the island.

Backed by the UK’s FCDO and the British High Commission, M-STAR is anchored locally by the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Centre (NDRRMC) under the aegis of the Prime Minister's Office, combining expertise from the University of Oxford and with Université des Mascareignes as the local academic partner.

The results from our official Inception Workshop, "Building a Pathway for Climate-Resilient Infrastructure Planning in Mauritius," held at Domaine Les Pailles, highlight crucial insights gained through direct engagement with key local authorities.

What M-STAR protects: The platform provides precise cost-benefit analyses to safeguard key national networks:
• Roads: 2,356+ km exposed to severe flash flooding.
• Water: Essential pipelines and storage facilities at risk.
• Power Grid: ~11,000 km of transmission lines threatened by cyclonic winds.

Key Speakers & Leaders:
• Goran Mandic (Deputy British High Commissioner)
• Aneerood Sookhareea (Police Superintendent, NDRRMC)
• Prof. Jim W. Hall (Project Director, University of Oxford)
• Dr. Jay Doorga (National Coordinator, Université des Mascareignes)

Together with relevant Mauritian stakeholders, we are turning risk assessments into strategic action for a safer, more resilient island! 🌿
