UoM Senior Management Team engages with Staff on Strategic Priorities ✨

The newly appointed Senior Management Team of the University of Mauritius invited all UoM staff members for an engagement session focused on the University's strategic direction and institutional priorities on Wednesday 10 June 2026 at the Paul Octave Wiehe Auditorium (POWA).

This first meeting with the Senior Management Team provided an opportunity to present the realignment of functions within the Office of the Vice-Chancellor, the Office of the Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Academia), and the Office of the Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Planning & Resources).

These adjustments form part of the University's ongoing commitment to strengthening governance structures, enhancing service delivery and supporting the effective implementation of its strategic objectives.

The session also underscored the importance of collaboration, shared purpose and collective engagement in advancing the mission and vision of the UoM as it continues to respond to the evolving needs of higher education and society.

UoM Students Shine on the International Stage at the HSBC/HKU Business Case Competition Finals

The University of Mauritius proudly celebrates the outstanding achievement of a team of UoM students who represented Mauritius at the prestigious HSBC/HKU Business Case Competition Finals held in Hong Kong from 1 to 5 June 2026.

After successfully advancing through the national selection process, the UoM team earned the opportunity to compete against 23 universities from across the globe, showcasing their analytical thinking, teamwork, problem-solving and presentation skills on an international platform.

The team comprised of the following students:
• Kritin Deenoo (Faculty of Law and Management - LLB)
• Siddharth Kumar Heeroo (Faculty of Law and Management - BSc (Hons) Business Management with Entrepreneurship)
• Yogesh Luchmun (Faculty of Law and Management - LLB)
• Drewshi Ramana (Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities - BSc (Hons) Economics with Finance)

While the team did not secure a winning position, their selection for the international finals reflects the talent, resilience and dedication of our students and serves as a testament to the quality of education at the University of Mauritius.

The University also acknowledges the commitment and guidance of the UoM coaches who played a pivotal role in preparing the students for this global competition:

International Symposium on Higher Education Leadership, Innovation & Capacity Development

The University of Mauritius hosted a symposium on 10 June 2026, an initiative of the Mauritius Institute of Education (MIE) in partnership with the University of Mauritius, the Open University of Mauritius and the Ministry of Tertiary Education, Science and Research.

The symposium, attended by the Pro-Vice Chancellor (Planning & Resources), aimed to bring together Heads of Higher Education Institutions, policymakers, academic experts and entrepreneurs from Europe, China, Africa and beyond, for meaningful exchanges on key issues shaping the future of higher education.

Discussions centred on higher education leadership, capacity development, entrepreneurship, Artificial Intelligence and micro-credentials, highlighting the importance of international collaboration in preparing institutions and learners for an evolving global landscape.

The symposium reaffirmed the collective commitment of stakeholders to advancing innovation, strengthening institutional capacity and driving excellence in higher education for sustainable development.

Three-Day Workshop on Gender-Responsive Leadership in STEM Doctoral Supervision - 10 to 12 June 2026

The opening ceremony of the Three-Day Workshop on Gender-Responsive Leadership in STEM Doctoral Supervision held yesterday set the stage for three days of reflection, learning and dialogue on creating more inclusive doctoral environments in STEM.

Organised by the Doctoral School of the University of Mauritius, the workshop forms part of the project “Advancing Women’s Leadership and Retention in STEM Doctoral Pathways”, funded under the SADC Women in Science, Engineering and Technology Organisation (WISETO) Initiative of the Ministry of Tertiary Education, Science and Research.

The opening ceremony was graced by Dr the Honourable Kaviraj Sharma Sukon, Minister of Tertiary Education, Science and Research, whose thought-provoking provocation challenged participants to reflect on the role of gender, diversity and leadership in shaping the future of STEM.

The programme also benefited from a second provocation by Dr Madhvee Madhou, Chief Executive Officer of the Food and Agricultural Research and Extension Institute (FAREI), who shared her perspectives on women's leadership in science, innovation and research, drawing from her own professional journey and experiences.

Participants are engaging with an outstanding team of facilitators comprising Professor Alisa Govender (University of Pretoria, South Africa), Dr Connie Nshemereirwe (Africa Science Leadership Programme, Uganda) and Dr Lydia Rhyman (University of Mauritius), who will guide discussions on inclusive and gender-responsive approaches to doctoral supervision.

Bringing together experienced supervisors, prospective supervisors and higher education professionals from several institutions, the workshop represents an important step towards strengthening women's participation, leadership and retention in STEM doctoral pathways.

Meeting with Rogers Capital's Finance & Tax Academy to explore Strategic Collaboration - 10 June 2026

The University of Mauritius welcomed representatives of Rogers Capital's Finance & Tax Academy for a constructive meeting with the Vice-Chancellor, the two Pro-Vice-Chancellors and Faculty members, held yesterday, to explore avenues for future collaboration in the field of tax education and professional skills development.

This meeting provided an opportunity to exchange views on initiatives aimed at strengthening the country's tax expertise and enhancing graduate employability following previous discussions held with the Faculty of Law and Management.

A Memorandum of Understanding is currently being considered under the Faculty of Law and Management.

Key areas of potential collaboration included the accreditation of specialised taxation courses, the development of a Postgraduate Diploma in Taxation, and the introduction of the SkillUp Programme designed to equip students and fresh graduates with essential workplace competencies, professional ethics, resilience, and career-readiness skills.

This collaboration, whether through student engagement, academic alignment, or potential accreditation, would be instrumental in ensuring the success and reach of these programmes.

UoM remains committed to fostering strategic partnerships with industry stakeholders to bridge the gap between academia and the professional world, while empowering students with relevant knowledge and future-focused skills that contribute to national development.

From Mauritius to Maribor: UoM Student Earns First Prize in International AI Challenge 🏆

Beebee Amreen Moushaifah Nassmally proudly represented the University of Mauritius at the Erasmus+ BIP Programme hosted by Academia in Maribor, from 18 to 22 May 2026, and even more honoured to share that her team, Ptuj, won the 1st Prize during the final Pitch Day competition.

Over five inspiring and intensive days, international students from more than 18 countries came together through the module AI in Creative Media Production to explore the future of Artificial Intelligence in digital storytelling, marketing, and media innovation.

Together with her teammates, Milan Kuštera from Metropolitan University, Leopold Bušić from Algebra Bernays University, Jan Altisent Brescó from Ilerna University, and Joy Nyawira Wariua from Varna University of Management, developed and presented 15 AI-generated videos using creative AI tools, alongside a UGC-style promotional video created as part of the campaign challenge.

Their project combined creativity, strategy, storytelling, and innovative media production, allowing them to stand out among the international teams.

Beyond the competition, this experience allowed her to collaborate in a truly international environment, exchange ideas with students from around the world, strengthen her presentation and creative skills, and gain valuable insight into the future of AI-driven media industries.

She expressed a sincere thank you to the University of Mauritius, Erasmus+, and Academia for this incredible and unforgettable opportunity.

🌍 Strengthening International Collaboration in Higher Education - 05 June 2026

The University of Mauritius was pleased to welcome a delegation from the Eswatini Qualifications Authority (EQA) and the Eswatini Higher Education Council (ESHEC) this Friday afternoon, as part of their study visit to Mauritius from 02 to 05 June 2026, organised by the Higher Education Commission.

The delegation met with the UoM Senior Management Team and Professor Raja V. Sannassee, Pro-Chancellor & Chairperson of the UoM Council, for fruitful discussions focused on advancing higher education systems through knowledge sharing and benchmarking.

Key areas of exchange included Micro-Credentials Frameworks, Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL), Credit Accumulation and Transfer Systems (CATS), Higher Education Management Information Systems (HEMIS), as well as learner records management and digital credentialing systems.

This engagement reflects a shared commitment to fostering innovation, quality assurance and excellence in higher education through international cooperation and the exchange of best practices.

STEM Future Dialogue-Inspiring the Next Generation of Women in STEM

The Doctoral School of the University of Mauritius hosted the STEM Future Dialogue on Wednesday 03 June 2026, bringing together 80 students from 22 public and private secondary schools across Mauritius for a morning of inspiration, discovery and meaningful dialogue.

A key feature of the event was its youth-to-youth approach, providing secondary school students with the opportunity to interact directly with doctoral students and recent PhD graduates who, not so long ago, were themselves sitting in secondary school classrooms.

Through their stories, experiences and achievements, our young researchers demonstrated that STEM careers are both accessible and rewarding.

Highlights of the programme included:
- Addresses by the Vice-Chancellor and Pro Vice-Chancellors (Academia)
- Inspiring testimonies from PhD alumni Dr Yusra Ruhomally and Dr Devina Lobine
- A panel discussion featuring current doctoral students from different faculties sharing their research journeys, challenges and aspirations

Organised by the Doctoral School with the support of the SADC Women in Science, Engineering and Technology Organisation (WISETO) Initiative of the Ministry of Tertiary Education, Science and Research, the event aimed to encourage more young girls to pursue studies and careers in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics.

UoM Hosts Distinguished Interactive Session on Ayurveda and Sustainable Development - 04 June 2026 🌿

The University of Mauritius successfully hosted a distinguished lecture and interactive session this Thursday afternoon, under the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences (FMHS), bringing together academic leaders, faculty members, and staff from diverse disciplines.

The session featured a presentation by Dr Pooja Sabharwal, Ayurveda Chair at the UoM, on the theme: “Positioning Ayurveda as a Transdisciplinary Knowledge System for Advancing Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs): Opportunities for Global Research and Innovation.”

The Acting Dean of FMHS, Dr Imteaz delivered the opening remarks and highlighted the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration and the role of traditional knowledge systems within higher education and research.

The lecture generated engaging and meaningful discussions among participants on the relevance of Ayurveda in research, innovation, public health, and sustainable development.

The Registrar appreciated the initiative and emphasized the value of academic integration and collaborative engagement, while the Vice Chancellor acknowledged the significance of such knowledge-sharing platforms and encouraged continued interdisciplinary partnerships in health sciences, innovation, and sustainability.

The session concluded on a positive note, reaffirming a shared commitment towards advancing Ayurveda as a global knowledge system that contributes to sustainable and holistic development.
