Good News!
Please could you help “Friends of OperArts” to launch our new initiative to bring Shakespeare to life in Mauritius. Through our contract with Trafalgar Releasing we have secured a brand new Royal Shakespeare Company production of Romeo and Juliet. It will be shown at Mcine Trianon on Saturday morning on August 25th at 11a.m. For the first time in Mauritius it will be possible to see a current RSC production on the big screen. We feel this is a very ‘newsworthy’ event which we hope to be able to repeat in the future if we receive sufficient support in numbers. By presenting the show on Saturday morning we hope to attract students who are studying Shakespeare at schools and colleges. It is a very well reviewed contemporary production which will help young and old to engage with the classic text. An experience like this could initiate a lasting love affair with the Bard! There are very few opportunities here to enjoy professional theatre and the RSC is recognized as the best in the world for what they do. Young people will be able to join the audience for only Rs.200 (Adults Rs. 400).
I am attaching our poster/invite to this mail. I would be very happy to talk to one of your journalists about this innovation if you were able to give us some coverage. Of course we would also like to offer your magazine staff a complimentary ticket. We are confident you will be able to report on an exciting and enjoyable experience.

Congratulations to all participants of the IPSC especially to the International Winner from Malaysia, Pavit Coran, who delivered a powerful speech entitled "Behind the Smile", which is about mental health disorder and the fear of being shamed. Indeed, mental health struggles is still very much a stigma in our Society. We take this opportunity to also congratulate our National Winner, Erin Hendrikse of Northfields International School, for representing Mauritius at the IPSC. 😍😘

[04/12/21]   It is with great sadness that we learned of the passing of His Royal Highness, Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. His demise will be an enormous loss to the United Kingdom and will leave a great void in the Commonwealth and within the ESU Family. ESU-Mauritius conveys its deepest condolences to HM The Queen, to ESU President, the Princess Royal, and to the whole Royal Family at this difficult time. Hereunder is a message from Ms Jane Easton, Director General, ESU Headquarters:

"We are deeply saddened by the death of His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh, President of the English-Speaking Union of the Commonwealth from 1952 to 2011, when he was succeeded by HRH The Princess Royal.
Prince Philip was a staunch supporter of the charity’s work, writing frequently and attending events at both Dartmouth House and venues across the world on our behalf. Our Public Speaking Competition, now the largest such competition for schools in England and Wales, came about as a direct result of a speech he made in 1960.
In 1991, at the World Schools Debating Championships, with which the ESU was involved, he said ‘There are bound to be winners and losers in any contest, but I hope that all the competitors will go home with respect for their opponents and with the realisation that different opinions are no bar to lasting friendships.’ With this sentence he encapsulated the whole purpose of the ESU, and we consider ourselves deeply honoured to have enjoyed his lifelong support.
Jane Easton / Director-General English-Speaking Union"

The English-Speaking Union

For our young facebook followers... This is a video from ESU headquarters in London. Our National Winner for PSC 2017, Miss Sanjana Chooneea, appears in the video. 😍

The English-Speaking Union believes every child should be able to make their voice heard.

We believe that the ability to progress and to thrive in life relies on oracy – speaking and listening – skills, which are not currently a prominent part of the school curriculum.

Our debate, public speaking and cultural exchange programmes help young people to engage with the world, to speak more confidently and to listen to and understand different points of view. These skills improve young people’s attainment, emotional intelligence and social skills, helping them to live their lives to the fullest.

28/10/2020

Congratulations to the Finalists and Winners of The English-Speaking Union’s Public Speaking Competition and to the eight teachers, who successfully completed the American English E-Teacher Program.
