ππ Celebrating Excellence at the 19th National Spelling Bee Competition Finals! ππ
On Thursday 4 June 2026, the English-Speaking Union (Mauritius), in collaboration with the U.S. Embassy Mauritius and the Mauritius Commercial Bank (MCB), proudly hosted the Finals of the 19th edition of the National Spelling Bee Competition for secondary schools at the MCB Auditorium, St Jean.
This year, 412 participants from 117 schools competed across six preliminary rounds, with the top 48 spellers (12 finalists each from Grades 7, 8, 9 and 10) earning their place in the national finals.
Since its introduction in Mauritius in 2002, the National Spelling Bee Competition has inspired thousands of young learners to expand their vocabulary, improve their pronunciation and definition skills, and develop a lifelong love for the English language. What began with 49 schools and Grades 7β8 has grown into a nationwide educational initiative reaching students across Grades 7β10.

The English Speaking Union Mauritius was delighted to support the Annual Interschool Public Speaking Competition hosted by Lighthouse Primary and Secondary School.
Our representatives, Mr. Kovilen Vencatachellum and Mrs. Sanjiveni Packiry-PoullΓ©, had the privilege of serving as adjudicators alongside talented young speakers from Lighthouse, Northfields and Ecole du Nord.
We were inspired by the confidence, creativity and critical thinking demonstrated by all participants. Competitions such as these provide an invaluable platform for students to develop their communication skills, express their ideas, and grow as future leaders.
Congratulations to all participants, teachers and organisers for a successful event. The ESU remains committed to promoting excellence in public speaking and supporting opportunities that empower young voices.
