Japanese lessons for learners of all ages and levels, from complete beginners to advanced students. My lessons focus on practical communication, grammar, vocabulary, and Japanese culture. For beginners, I mainly use IRODORI, a textbook created by the Japan Foundation, along with additional materials tailored to each student's goals, interests, and learning pace. I believe that learning a language is not only about memorizing words and grammar, but also about understanding the culture and connecting with people. I enjoy creating a comfortable and encouraging learning environment where students can gain confidence and enjoy their Japanese journey. Since I started teaching music to teenagers at the age of 19, I have always loved sharing knowledge and learning together with my students. I also have international work experience as an onboard receptionist on a US cruise line and as a bank teller in Japan, which helped me develop strong communication skills and understand learners from different cultural backgrounds. 🇯🇵 Japan Trivia 🇯🇵

Did you know? One Japanese kanji can have several different readings!

For example, the kanji 「人」 means “person” and can be read in different ways depending on the word.

「人」(hito) = person

「日本人」(nihon jin) = Japanese person

「三人」(san nin) = three people

So, the same kanji 「人」 can be read as hito, jin, or nin! 😲

This is one of the interesting — and sometimes challenging — things about learning Japanese kanji.

Japanese has many kanji with multiple readings, so you often learn the reading together with the whole word rather than learning just one reading for each kanji.

Once you get used to it, you may start to recognize which reading to use from the word. 😊

🇯🇵 Mini Japanese Lesson: 山の日 ⛰️

August 11th is 山の日 (Yama no Hi), or Mountain Day, in Japan!

Let’s look at the Japanese:

山（やま）＝ mountain ⛰️
日（ひ）＝ day ☀️
の = connects two nouns

山 + の + 日
山の日（やまのひ）＝ Mountain Day

The particle の is often used to connect two nouns.

And speaking of mountains… 🏔️

I climbed Le Morne here in Mauritius last month! 🇲🇺
So this year, I can celebrate 山の日 while thinking about both Japanese and Mauritian mountains. 😊

🇯🇵 Japan Trivia 🍡

Did you know? Mochi isn't always sweet!

Many people outside Japan know mochi as a sweet dessert, such as mochi filled with red bean paste or ice cream.

But in Japan, mochi is much more than a dessert. It is a familiar food that can be enjoyed in many different ways — a little like how bread can be eaten in many forms in other countries.

One famous example is "ozoni" (お雑煮), a traditional New Year's soup with mochi. The interesting thing about ozoni is that the ingredients and flavor change depending on the region and family.

My family's ozoni is made with a soy sauce-based soup, chicken, and komatsuna (Japanese spinach).

My favorite way to eat mochi is grilled mochi with sugar and soy sauce, wrapped in seaweed! 😋

Just like bread, everyone has their own favorite way to enjoy it.

Here's what you were looking at:

Many people think onigiri is a type of sushi because both are made with rice. However, they are actually different foods.
The biggest difference is the rice.
Sushi is made with vinegared rice, which is seasoned with vinegar, sugar, and salt.

🍙 Onigiri is usually made with plain rice, often lightly salted, and filled with ingredients such as salmon, tuna, or pickled plum.
That's why onigiri is not considered sushi, even though they may look similar.

🇯🇵 Japan Trivia 🍣

Do you like sushi? What's your favorite kind of sushi?

One of my students recently told me they had mango sushi, and I was so surprised! 😊

In Japan, fruit is rarely used in traditional sushi, so hearing about mango sushi reminded me how differently Japanese food has evolved around the world.

Traditional Japanese sushi is all about keeping the ingredients simple and letting their natural flavors shine. It's usually made with vinegared rice and topped with fresh seafood, egg, or vegetables. It's often enjoyed with wasabi and soy sauce, although not every type of sushi is eaten with both.

Unlike some international versions, traditional sushi rarely includes cheese, mayonnaise, or fruit. That said, avocado has become more common in Japan in recent years, influenced by the popularity of international-style sushi.

Food naturally changes as it travels around the world, and every country adds its own unique twist. I always enjoy discovering how Japanese dishes are interpreted in different cultures.

Personally, I love seeing people's reactions when they visit Japan and try traditional sushi for the first time. Many are surprised by how simple it is—but that's exactly what makes it so special. 🍣

By the way, my favorite is maguro (tuna) sushi. It pairs perfectly with a little wasabi! 😋
