Northfields was proud to be invited to attend the Let’s do it Award ceremony last Wednesday 14th July at the Flying Dodo Bagatelle. We were joined by The honourable Soobeersing Dhunoo, Deputy Chief Government Whip and The Honourable Mohammad Anwar Husnoo, Vice-Prime Minister, Minister of Local Government, Disaster and Risk Management.

We were presented with a Gratitude award for our contribution to the World clean-up day, and our very own Biology teacher and Environmental representative for the school and for the region, Mr Ashley Gooljar, won an outstanding achiever award.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the school community that helped us with the clean-up day at Daruty Forest. This award represents everyone’s dedication and effort to keeping Mauritius clean and taking care of our environment. We will plan future similar events later in the year and look forward to an even greater participation so that we can continue to provide support to this fantastic initiative.

On Friday 9th July we celebrated the Graduation of the Class of 2021. Despite the COVID-19 restrictions in place, we were able to accomodate our graduates and their guests with very careful planning. Our ceremony was also streamed live online for our graduates who could unfortunately not attend and for our wider community. Guest of Honour, Mr Hassamal spoke about the importance of communication in all aspects of life whilst our Principal commended our graduates on their ability to adapt in the challenging circumstances that the class have endured over their last 2 years of high school. Despite the scaled down ceremony, we are grateful to all who participated and contributed to honour this special occasion. We wish our Class of 2021 all the best in their future endeavours.

Northfields is incredibly proud of our two Year 5 EAL students, Clovis T. and Mark S., who came in first and second place (scoring the most points worldwide), in the annual 'Learning Village' competition. The Learning Village is an award-winning online programme, that we use to support students in their English language learning. The boys will soon be receiving their prizes from the UK. Bravo!

Congratulations go to our Head of Middle School, Mrs Rungasamy, on recently authoring two books, copies of which she has donated to our library. We have asked her to share a few words on her motivation and achievements:
"Always follow your heart and fulfil your dreams. As a child and teenager, I always loved to read. I used to love spending hours sitting in a corner of our local library reading. It would be fascinating to discover different cultures and a whole new world. My secret dream was to write a book myself, but instead of one, I ended up with 2 books. It is my pleasure for me to share my 2 books with you all which are available in our school library.
The first book is a collection of poetry entitled: The Awakening. The second book is on my weight loss journey entitled: Healthy Eating, Happy Life. There are so many people in Mauritius and world-wide who would like to lose weight, but simply require some motivation. I hope my book may be a source of inspiration.
My sincere thank you to my family, colleagues, our librarian Mrs Helen Keetarut, Mr John Mcllraith, and our Principal, Mrs Phyllis Philogene who have all believed in my ability to write. I hope you enjoy the book."

The development of these skills plays a crucial role in supporting the IB’s mission to develop active, compassionate and lifelong learners. Although these skills areas are presented as distinct categories, there are close links and areas of overlap between them, and the categories should be seen as interrelated.

As Northfields completed this academic year through remote learning, it was quite a challenge for our Lower Primary Students. To see the best results, we all saw how parents and teachers have worked together as a family and this will always be a proud moment for Northfields.
For Mother's Day this year, Miss Ash from Lower Primary organized a very special Appreciation Token which was sent through post to each mum as a surprise to let them know that they are appreciated for their efforts and help provided through this challenging time.

The Lower Primary is very committed to the environment. Whether it is through raising awareness, field work, or projects, they are deeply engaged in the protection of the environment.

To raise awareness among our students the teachers have decided to create a drawing competition: "Eco-Superhero". The children had to draw and describe their Superhero whose responsibility is to protect our planet.

The winner was Amelia R.
The other participants also received a certificate for their good work: Olivia S., Jude S., Emilie T. and Alice B.
Congratulations to all.

The Pre-Nursery’s primary theme for the last term of this academic year is the “Island of Mauritius”. Our students were first introduced to an abstract idea that they live on a planet called Earth and that it is made up of land and water. Taking this learning experience further, they have been involved in learning activities that reinforce the fact that their home is an island and that it is surrounded by an ocean.

We would like to thank our Pre-Nursery families as they join us in bringing Mauritius alive at home through all the learning that is taking place.

The IB’s six approaches to teaching guide and focus educators and students. They play a crucial role in ensuring that the aspirations of an IB education become a reality in the classroom. The approaches are centred on a cycle of inquiry, action and reflection. They also place a great deal of emphasis on relationships. This reflects the IB’s belief that educational outcomes are profoundly shaped by the relationships between teachers and students, and celebrates the many ways that people work together to construct meaning and make sense of the world.
