I recently had the privilege of presenting my doctoral research at the PLS-SEM 2026 Conference on โ€œThe Hidden Career Power of Public Speaking: How Perceived Competence, Anxiety and Self-Efficacy Shape Perceived Career Success.โ€

The conference brought together 112 participants, 65 presentations and scholars from more than 23 countries, which made the experience particularly meaningful.

I am especially grateful for the feedback and perspectives shared by Professor Hingle from the University of Hamburg, Professor John Parnell from the University of Alabama, Professor Michael Troilo from the Busch School of Business at The Catholic University of America, and Professor Gabriel Cepeda Carriรณn from the University of Sevilla.

Their comments helped me look more critically at the psychological constructs within my conceptual model, the relationships between perceived competence, self-efficacy and anxiety/confidence, and the way these factors connect with perceived career progression. The discussions also provided valuable perspectives on the measurement model, discriminant validity, structural relationships and mediation effects.

From a PLS-SEM perspective, the model performed strongly. The lowest outer loading was .835, AVE ranged from .762 to .854, and the highest HTMT value was .770, supporting both convergent and discriminant validity.

For years, my Public Speaking Masterclasses have relied heavily on active participation, repeated exposure, prepared and impromptu speaking, constant feedback and multiple opportunities to perform. Participants are exposed to more than 25 speaking opportunities across the five-week programme.

This research now gives me the opportunity to refine that model even further.

The feedback received from international academics and scholars will directly influence the future development of the Masterclass by helping me better understand which aspects of training strengthen perceived competence, self-efficacy and confidence, and which mechanisms are most likely to contribute to perceived career progression.

My ambition is therefore to make the Shaun Payen Public Speaking Masterclass not only one of the strongest communication programmes in the world, but potentially one of the most research-informed and evidence-driven public speaking programmes internationally.

The aim is to continuously align training practice with doctoral research, psychological theory and empirical evidence, so that the programme is not simply designed to make participants feel more confident, but to develop measurable capability through repeated practice, mastery and structured feedback.
