The 15th of Rajab marks the Urs of Imam Jafar as-Sadik (RA)

Imam Ja’far as-Sadiq (RA) was born in Madina around 80 AH. His lineage joins two noble lines: through his father to Sayyidina Ali (RA), and through his mother to Sayyidina Abu Bakr (RA). In the early generations of Islam, he stood as a leading scholar of Madina in hadith, fiqh, and tafsir, respected across the Ummah. In the Naksibendi silsila, he is remembered as a foundational link in the Golden Chain: a model of knowledge who set a standard of humility, worship, and careful adab.

Imam Malik (RA) described what it felt like to sit with him: “Whenever the Prophet (AS) was mentioned in his presence he would immediately collect himself and he would practically turn pale. I went to him for a long time and I always saw him in one of these three states: He was either praying, fasting or reciting the Qur’an. I never heard him narrate a hadith without having his wudu. He never spoke anything which was of no benefit.” That same combination of ilm and inner discipline shows up in his words on tasawwuf and sincerity: “True Zikir is that which makes a person forget all masiwa (that is everything that distances him from Allah). At that point, Allah, Most High, is above all else.”

Imam Ja’far as-Sadiq (RA) established a precedent in the early generations of Islam that tasawwuf is inseparable from the essence of the religion, standing alongside Shari‘ah and fiqh, not apart from them. As one of the leading figures of the Ahlul Bayt, he emphasized through his teaching that attention to the inner self and the disciplining of the nafs is as necessary as outward obedience. For him, spirituality without law was misguidance, and law without inner purification was incomplete. This balance became a defining feature of the Sunni spiritual tradition and was carried forward through the Naksibendi silsila.
