Having fun with an optical illusion display at the Curious Corner of Chamarel, one of Mauritius' most famous attractions. Between the beaches, the mountains, and the tourist attractions, study abroad students have plenty to visit on the weekends.

Student Opening Ceremony - September 2016 12/10/2016

We were thrilled to welcome ALU's second ever class at the 2016 Opening Ceremony. Come join us in Mauritius today!

The Opening Ceremony was both a celebration and induction to welcome our new students to the community. Students displayed their beautiful cultures through fashion, food and awesome performances.

Mauritius has a vibrant arts community, evident in the murals found across the capital city, Port Louis. ALU study abroad students have the opportunity to volunteer and intern with arts organizations from across the island.

Meet our first study abroad student - Kevin Cheng from Taiwan!

"I want to get to know every student at ALU. I'm here to learn about the continent because at home, what we usually learn about Africa is through American movies. I also want to teach you guys about Asia." A hearty and warm welcome to ALU's first study abroad student Kevin Kai Wen Cheng from Taiwan!

"On one evening, I was at a supermarket trying to buy some toiletries. As I got to the isle, I was really confused as most of the products were written in French. I stood in the isle puzzled for a few minutes until a young lady noticed me. She asked me what was wrong and I explained my problem to her. She grabbed my shopping list and spent the next hour and a half helping me get everything I needed, and afterwards she gave me tips about navigating Mauritius. This is just one instance where I have experienced the hospitality of Mauritians. If I had to describe Mauritius in one sentence it would be: ‘The land of hospitality’. Although it seems far away and the middle of no where, in Mauritius, you will find family and you will find a home."

What do you hope your study abroad buddy will take from his/her experience at ALU?

I hope he/she will take away the essence and culture of ALU; the spirit of Ubuntu. I also hope he/she can be enlightened and inspired by our African stories so as to at least clear the stereotypes created by foreign media about both Africa and Africans.

ALU is like a united family of people from all over the world with a common cause of making the world a better place. It's more than okay to be different here. You can be whoever you want knowing there is also someone out there looking out for you.
